$9 seems like a lot, but it's unlikely that any of us will need a do-or-die fire more than once (if at all.) It wouldn't replace cheaper fire starters, but I wouldn't mind having one of these for that once in a life time event. I have a road flare in my winter day pack. It's 6 oz. though. This looks more compact and light enough for a summer pack.
