Horn, Mineral oil & Lanolin

I'll have to give that some thought. I do have a slab of raw beeswax.
Actually raw beeswax collects a lot of dirt and dust if just raw. I use it on my flint knapping tools. Works great for a good grip but looks like crap after some use. Probably great for surf wax too. I mix olive oil and bees wax two to one for lip balm and its pretty dang stiff. For it to soak in wood you'd have to use just a minute piece of wax to a lot of oil probably 20:1 or more? Dont know cause I havent tried it on a Khuk.

SingleG. What ratio do you mix the bees wax to min oil for your knife balm? Just for the metal parts right?

I looked it up: "Renaissance Wax Polish is a blend of highly refined micro-crystalline fossil-origin waxes." Sounds like it might be Paraffin wax. Have you used it?

Maybe I misspoke when I said my beeswax was raw. It occurs to me that a honeycomb in a jar of honey is white. My wax is a golden yellow brown, so it might not be raw. Beeswax is solid at room temperature. How do you keep the mineral oil and beeswax mixed?

Urea?...Hmmm?:D That gives me an idea!

don't you dare! :)

Bees wax will mix with any oil once you heat it. The more oil you add the softer the resulting wax will be. I think it melts near boiling water temp. I havent measured it actually but its definitely higher than normal paraffin candle wax. It doesnt clean up well using hot water out of the tap. Ask my wife:D I got a good butt chewing for that one. I know mines raw because I dug it out of the tree myself (the wax that is). Raw wax can be and is usually yellow as well. I had some white comb as well but I just mixed it all together. The white comb is the newer most recently made stuff. I guess it yellows with age?

HA!! Kronck! Hey you know that Kuhuk I sold you?....uh...well...:D I hope Pugs dont see this:confused: Just kidding pugs...really!

Ren wax smells like shoe polish and since I dint know any other substance which does chances are they share the same main ingredient.

Ndog, I'm not sure the exact ratio, but I like to make it pretty firm; close to 1:1 or 2:1 mineral oil if I had to guess. I usually just eyeball it and then mix "to taste" if you will. My goal is to make something that stays on for as long as possible, while also providing hydration, rather than something that provides lots of moisture but has to be reapplied often. For my EDC or hard use blades, I still only put knife balm on every week or 2, and it goes on the whole knife, blade and handle. Actually, I was originally calling it blade balm, but decided that was a misnomer since I was using it for the whole knife.

I talked about it in an older thread, including some of my process. I'll put up a pic and link to that.

Ok here it is, posts 25 and 39 have some relevant info on what it is and how I make it, respectively. Not much, but it's something. I can post more about it if you're curious, it works great for me.

Ah Thanks SG! I knew you mentioned it somewhere but just couldnt find it. I may try a bit of BLO mixed with mineral oil and see how that works. I like to put the thin runny stuff on when my knives are just being stored. Gives it plenty of time to soak in. You mix might be great on my regular users. I suppose I could keep it on the blade all the time. Ill play around with some and let you know what happens. I do like the idea of taking a solid with me camping versus a liquid. Great for fire starting as well.

Thanks for all the advice guys. I think I'll moisturize each new khukuri differently. Johnson's floor wax sure seems simple. The repair and soak on this one came out great. Bawanna was right, the soak didn't hurt the epoxy repair. You're going to notice an "I already had" theme for materials. I already had mineral oil and it was recommended so I soaked in it for 3 days. I cleaned it off and let it sit for a day. I already had lanolin, and Jens used it with good result so I applied that for a day, re-applied for another day and cleaned it off with a soft towel. Guess what's next, I already have beeswax. I think I'll mix the three for as a periodic rub. I'm thinking about getting some Neatsfoot Oil (Bubulum Oil) and adding that, cuz it's in hoof flex.

Speaking of which, Original Hoof Flex = Active Ingredients: Neatsfoot Oil (Bubulum Oil) 23%, Lanolin 13%, Chloroxylenol 1.5%
Inactive Ingredients: Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Paraffin, Petrolatum, Pinus Palustris Wood Tar, Rosin, Tallow, Turpentine

No problem man. I had to channel some Steve to find it, but I did. The solid vs liquid was something I took into heavy consideration, but just to clarify, I still do a BLO bath or at the least wipe the handle down with mineral oil a few times before the knife balm goes on for the first time. Goal is to add moisture, then lock it in.

It also goes into little containers easily, for them camping trips you were talkin bout, as well as giving to friends/family. It makes great lip balm as well!

Lip balm/knife balm/fire starter/add some shark live oil and it could be used as hemorrhoid creme:D...uhhhh. naw...forget that. wouldnt want to get things mixed up.

I buy these lip balm tubes for less than $10 shipped for fifty of them and they last forever. You can recycle them several times before they crap out. I add essential oils of eucalyptus, tee tree, camphor, or whatever you want but its all oil so it will double as knife balm as well im thinking. Multi purpose!

Lip balm
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Homemade lip balms

Lip balm or lip salve is a wax-like substance applied topically to the lips of the mouth to moisturize and relieve chapped or dry lips, angular cheilitis, stomatitis, or cold sores. Lip balm often contains beeswax or carnauba wax, camphor, cetyl alcohol, lanolin, paraffin, and petrolatum, among other ingredients. Some varieties contain dyes, flavor, fragrance, phenol, salicylic acid, and sunscreens.

The primary purpose of lip balm is to provide an occlusive layer on the lip surface to seal moisture in lips and protect them from external exposure. Dry air, cold temperatures, and wind all have a drying effect on skin by drawing moisture away from the body. Lips are particularly vulnerable because the skin is so thin, and thus they are often the first to present signs of dryness. Occlusive materials like waxes and petroleum jelly prevent moisture loss and maintain lip comfort while flavorants, colorants, sunscreens, and various medicaments can provide additional, specific benefits.

Lip balm can be applied where a finger is used to apply it to the lips, or in a lipstick-style tube from which it can be applied directly.

Lip balm was first marketed in the 1880s by Charles Browne Fleet.

interesting - will salisylic acid eat steel?

even more interesting, wiki goes on to say:

Dependency

Some physicians have suggested that certain types of lip balm can be addictive or contain ingredients that actually cause drying. Lip balm manufacturers sometimes state in their FAQs that there is nothing addictive in their products or that all ingredients are listed and approved by the FDA. Snopes found the claim that there are substances in Carmex that are irritants necessitating reapplication, such as ground glass, to be false.

had a look online @ ebay - constituents of lip balm vary considerably, not all have beeswax and/or lanolin, varied use of mineral almond, coconut, jojoba oil. some oils, like mineral/jojoba are also laxitives. the cheap ones tend not to list ingredients at all.

Ground glass:eek: Laxative:eek:. That cant be good the next day!
That batch there will probably last me ten years unless I eat too much of that yellow nacho cheeze and need them for laxatives. Ive been using the stuff for 50 years with no problems so I aint worried about be addicted to nothin:D

What about sharp pointy things, you seem to have control issues in their regard?

Laxative is probably just these artificial sweeteners which if eaten too much cause a lose tummy. Eating 5 rolls of mentos in the 90s did that to one of my class mates.
Putting a bit of that stuff on the lips shouldn't harm.
But as somebody who only hugs organic trees I wouldn't put anything like that on my lips anyways.

I think this is the route I'm going. I've been sitting on a cake of beeswax for years. It was slotted for bullet lube, but I didn't use it for that. Time to put it too use.
