Horse knives

Thanks Hugh, fixed is probably a better choice. Soon as you mention fixed Jim posts the Myerchin site - cool!

Jim,

That A500 looks like it might be in the "best tool for the job" category. The Myerchin site says 440C on the A500 and the price is very reasonable. Right tool for the job, good steel and good price. I like that. Not sure about the Marlinspike and reshaping into a horsepick. I do like the A508 with the dual carry sheath. If I was on the water much this would be a "must have". Thanks for the post.

If you want something really special, talk to a custom maker and see what you can design. Bob Garbe, for example--in Knives Illustrated (Oct. 99) there is a picture of a beautiful small fixed blade he made with a hook (several options on these) that folds out of the handle. I'm sure he or another maker could give you what you want.

A custom could be something really special. The more knives I have the more I am thinking about custom knives. Custom might be the perfect answer in this case.

Custom Sheepfoot? try Jen Anso. I am going to get something from him myself once my other custom orders come in. and I've got some money

Bob:
If you go with a fixed blade make sure it's in a sheath or in a position that will protect both horse and rider in a wreck.

Bob - this is sure a fun thread. We have 4 horses and I am a trail rider (never shown one in my life). The most useful things I can think of are the "Rescue" type blades and an awl in case you have to make emergency repairs on the trail. I know how to mend my tack in an emergency, and a good knife with an awl type blade can be invaluable. Actually it's easier to just carry a hoof pick than to buy a special knife. I often carry a Leatherman and a serrated blade knife both.

I've never had to cut my horse loose; the one time I needed to she was going nuts and I couldn't get close. The fencepost pulled out of the ground first, with fencing planks attached. She was swinging all this around like it was nothing. I decided to let nature take it's course rather than get brained by all this stuff flying around. She got injured but I didn't.
