Horseman's/Sportsman's Knives!!

You remembered correctly!! :p
He paid someone (an aide??) named Clasby $1.00 to source a pocket knife!!😲View attachment 1575578
Quite a relic!! I hope it was in better shape when he paid $1.00 just to find one!!😄

Dang, he sure got more than a dollar's worth of use out of it though, even if we adjust for inflation!

And if we go even deeper down the rabbit hole, I wonder what the coin used in the transaction really was as Spanish pesos (= 8 reales) or British crowns (= 5 shilling) would still be quite commonly in use, if not even be more common than actual dollar coins.

I'm not sure if this one counts, Charlie. It isn't super old but is vintage nonetheless. It was made by TEW and seems hardly used with its full blades and tools. Everything still has a lot of snap - though the corkscrew is very difficult to open.

How long have you been hiding that TEW from us my friend ???? Is the Pull on the main blade sort of Strong ???? Does the knife kind of remind you of a Tank .

I only just recently got it in, though I purchased it some time ago - International shipping tends to be rather slow, especially these days. This knife is very stoutly built, with the blades and tools all having a rather firm pull and excellent snap. I have some old Scout knives where the makers could have learned a thing or two from this knife - it's very nicely built. I need to give it a good flush and oiling and maybe clean some of the surface rust off here and there but once I do, it's going to be an excellent tool.

Charlie Sir - Those Horseman Knives you have shared with us has blown my socks off!
If I would have just the one I would be extremely happy.
ALL of them are fantastic- even the Ulster I would have snatched up as there seems to be few of those around!
Dylan!! That Taylor’s Eye Witness is stunning - alongside Joseph Rodgers - TEW has to be the most collectible.
Fantastic viewing friends!
Edit:
Modoc Ed and Railsplitter - nice modern versions!

Hi Duncan Campbellclanman Campbellclanman - It is a Case 7254HP Trapper with a clip blade and a hoof pick blade made by Case in this configuration for over eighty years - not exactly what I'd describe as modern. True it doesn't have a gazillion blades but it serves a purpose. We even have a guy here in town who is a blacksmith and uses one just like this to clean horses hooves when he is shoeing them.

Ed - Thank you my friend! I appreciate you coming back to me, I had never seen the Case version of a Horseman / Sportsman before !!

I am posting my inquiry also here, where the knife belongs:

My buddy snatched this beauty in an auction. It is quite unusual to see a Sheffield made knife where he lives and is thirsty for some background information about the origins and history of this pattern or piece. Basically anything. Therfore I kindly ask more knowledgeable memebers to help us out and point us to any sources regarding the knife.
Thank you in advance!

Compare it to the Stag pictured in post number 2!! And how long is your friend's knife??
I cannot answer this question at this point, the knife is still underway. All I know is that the main blade should be about 6cm long, so I reckon 3½ inches?

So that this thread isn't left with these questions unanswered, I'm adding a link to H herder 's extremely informative post in a thread dedicated to this knife

I only have two Sheffield Horseman's Knives unfortunately, and the main blade on the first, by TEW, is heavily worn, with the Pen blade missing, and a damaged corkscrew :( It's clearly had a hard working life.

My second Sheffield Horseman's Knife, by John Watts, is smaller, and also in poor shape :(

I remember showing this knife to Stan Shaw, and in a split second he had adjusted the fit of the hoof-pick with his wee hammer :D :)

It had arrived and it is 8.5 cm ≈ 3 ⅜ inches long when closed.

Those are all amazing examples, but tweezers under the covers got me. I would merrily credit SAK with this invention.
