How do I heat treat and temper 1095 steel?

Cryo treatment is an extension of the quench and not tempering. Just because a steel has been cooled to room temperature doesn't mean it's finished quenching, in some cases, and that's where sub zero or cryogenic quenching comes into play.

I don't consider it very beneficial for a simple carbon steel like 1095. Not beneficial enough to go to the trouble of getting set up to do it just for simple carbon steels anyway. Some makers that are set up to do it already, will cryo treat everything because it's easy and they can. But I think one would be hard pressed to show the difference between a cryo treated 1095 blade and one that followed the same exact heat treat regimen minus cryo.
