Full Tang Clan touched on this RE: the smilidon (the saber toothed cat) program. They spoke in that of a popular eastern (I think India) knife design that was used for rear approach throat cutting. The face/mouth would be grabbed with the left hand and the blade would be stabbed into the right side of the neck. Its design would cause it to cut its way out severing whatever it had penetrated. Sounds pretty effeceint for sentry removal.
The hobbit knife system also utilized the reverse curve as I recall.
BATNW I agree that by far the most common usages are utility.
