how much of it is style???

I collect knives so I can use knives. :D

There are only a few knives that I own that I don't use the hell out of, and it's mostly because they're either antiques or because I got them for free and they're not patterns I would enjoy using as compared to just keeping them a part of a collection of sorts.

Honestly, some knives are nicer to look at then they are to use, and vise versa. I like and enjoy both, but will go for function over looks more often than not. :)

I agree with ya bro......but ditch the Wave for a Swiss Spirit it's far more sexy !!!!:D:thumbup:

I haven't read any of the other replies.... I will go back after I respond.

I believe that "state of mind" is everything. As long as a few technical/functional issues are addressed, how a knife performs is directly related to the mental attitude of its user. So a tool that gives you a good feeling would be superior to one that makes you feel "so-so"... even though the physical attributes might be identical between the two.

I have to add that I truly believe that Nessmuk would have given his left testical for a multitool. Even back then, they had brass wire, nuts, screws, bolts, fishing tackle, chipped axes, hot cooking pot lids and everything else we use our multitools for..... one of the greatest gadgets invented, IMHO.

Rick, again.

I have an odd one for you. I have yet to see a knife in a picture thread, book, article, or magazine that was HOT looking - and saved a life.

For instance - the knife that was used by the write of 'Adrift' was a simple cheapie SAK style folder.

I think many of us are collectors more than we would admit.

What makes a knife "hot looking" is a matter of personal opinion though. I have an Aurora that is a great knife, but I don't care for its aesthetics. Most others I have met really like the looks. I find my Koster Bushcraft to be a visually appealing knife and will choose it over the Aurora every time for that reason even though I prefer a convexed blade.

I think that you hear about cheap knives more than the rest becasue they are much more common and more likely to be carried by the average person when things go wrong.

Some very good points and great thread, thanks! I agree with about everything you said. It should be a tool, I/we get caught up sometimes and just like the knife so much we are afraid to use it and they become oiled up and tucked away in a drawer.....and brought out once in while to admire.....keep in mind I am pointing a finger at myself too.

If my Grandfather were still alive he would get a chuckle from it, and ask what good is the darn thing if you won't use it.....good quesiton I think. I think it's folks like us that are knife knuts that want and want always thinking that next one is gonna be "the one".

The sane folks that only have one or two and don't know the difference cause they work great for them won't likely migrate to a website like this one:) they couldn't imagine having or needing more than the two they've got. And like you said, if they work, what else do you need.

Guess we all have to have a touch of OCD to be like were are here, again pointing finger at myslef! To be honest, I don't have near as many knives as most of the good folks here, but the few I do have were given to be my very good friends, or family. But it doesn't mean I don't keep looking and wanting......is there any form of therapy for us?:D For me lately it's been being "broke" that seems to curb the appetite rather quickly.

I don't have a good multi-tool, but can see where they would come in very handy.

Again, good post, made me stop and think.

I have to add that I truly believe that Nessmuk would have given his left testical for a multitool.

What if he had to use the multi-tool in order to extract said testicle??? In that case, I think he'd be better off with a SAK :D
