how to tie a lanyard?

Much of the stuff labeled "parachute cord" is not; it's often much cheaper and weaker and may not even have a nylon core. I suppose even the cheap stuff is good enough for some purposes....

You can get real 550 cord at military surplus stores. There are some other sizes, too, and different colors. I get black 550 cord at a local surplus store that also does mail order: http://www.drop-zone.com/

They're still working on the website; you'll probably have to get the paper catalog. There are other places that sell paracord on the web; any search engine should turn them up. Try to find it locally, though; unless you're ordering something else at the same time the shipping charges are going to amount to more than the price.... (It goes for $4 for 50 feet.)

Ashley's Book of Knots is a classic and excellent knot text. It is also very expensive. My (old) library has a copy but it is usually checked out. Other forumites may want to try their library. Also put in request for knife books at your local library. Give them specific titles of current print books, not just "knife books" written on a card.

If you are having trouble with your Scaffold knots turning out loose, just roll the knot in-between your thumb and forefinger, then tighten it, then roll it again, then tighten again.....

I put a small cord on my Cetan and used the above method on it. My wife says I should go work for Microtech now. I wonder if they are hiring........hmmmm.

Thanks 4th. I took you advice and it worked extremely well. I was able to get some very tight scaffold knots. The other advantage, other than having both ends coming straight out the back (rather than thru a loop) was that by rolling towards one end or the other I was able to adjust the length of the loose ends and keep them equal.

Thanks again.

I found a GREAT cord for making lanyards for smaller knives. I have some old Tasco, Simmons, and misc generic binoculars laying around. (The cheap litte 8 power jobbies that you can buy anywhere.) My kids pulled the string out of one side of one of the binocs, so I just yanked the other side out and used it. It is tough stuff. Don't know what it is exactly, but I'd like to find more. (This is the cord I used on my Cetan.)
