Husqvarna Hatchet Review

Sold. I've been looking for a good hatchet. I had a Wetterlings on my wishlist for a while, but this review and the others I have seen have really sold me on this. I can't wait to pick one up.

I got mine from Bailey's. I've had good luck with them.

I just got one of these I ordered online. I don't know if the grain could be more perfectly sideways (hazard of ordering online).

Should I just use it as is for however long it lasts? Or should I take the chance to find a new handle and hang it myself? I have never done that before, but would be willing to try. I am really liking the look and feel of the hatchet, but the grain has me a little worried. Obviously I am not that experienced with this, so any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

Wow, that's the worst grain I've seen in while. Don't know what's happening with Wetterlings QC, as problems are happening way too much. FYI that handle will probably loosen without a metal pin (they used to put those on until last year). If I were you I'd send it back and get another one.

This is not good grain. That being said, on a 1.25lb hatchet, it will last you a lifetime without a problem. I can't tell from the picture who the manufacturer of this one is.

I think you'd have to try in order to get the grain any worse on that handle!

Thanks for another great review Ross.
Husqvarna Hatchet is def. a great choice.
My questions (by comparison with the Wetterlings):
1. How does this unknown steel holds an edge?
2. How difficult is it to re-sharpen?
I'm assuming there is no major difference between the two.

I have not done any specific comparison to Wetterlings, but compared to the Gransfors Bruks, the steel seems exactly the same. I can not detect any difference in edge retention and the blades get damaged under the exact same conditions.

Here is my 18" Wetterling large hunter, with a 1.5lb bit.

With the circular pin.

And My Husqvarna hatchet. I have two with the pins and two without.

Perfect grain.

The edge retention is the same, as far as I can tell. The Geometry of the Husky is thinner than the Wetterling. Husky on right.

I think they are one of the best bargains out there. The fit and finish on mine have all exceeded my Wetterlings. They are on par with the GB's for sure...

Hey !
Think you soon will have to do a new review of the Husqvarna axes as there will be new ones out soon i know that they change manufacturers on there axes.

In other words, get them while they last. Might I suggest you also consider a forest axe.

I will bet the prices go up on the next run. Right now you can find a forest axe for around $65. That is a real bargain for a 26" power house. Mine throws chips like a demon. It will out chop any kukri, machete, golok, i have, hands down... It is slightly heavier, but no contest. It's amazing what putting the 2lbs at the end of 26" handle will do. There is a lot of force going into that 4" cutting face. It Rocks!!!

The first shall be out there somewhere they was send a month ago. It was a batch of 8 differents modeL.The price is something that Husqvarna sets so that i can say nothing about but i think there will not be any different and if it will not go up with much

I'm not sure if the steel is a little softer, but my Husky gets dull a little faster than my regular Wetterlings. On the plus side, I expect that the bit will be tougher as a result.

Thanks for the review! I purchased a 13" model that came with a slightly different designed head, but the grain was good and it had the circular metal pin. I am MORE than pleased with it! it packs away nicely and chops like a beast! Great review man!
