Actually a really good kid. At the point in the spiel where he asks me to get a plain edge and a serrated edge knife, I slip over and pullout my Fallkniven White Whale, the Boker Ti paring knife and a Friedrich Dick bread knife. Of course, I have spent some time on the EDGEPRO getting the first two to hair popping edges and the DMT has got the bread knife sharper than it ever was. :D

I am afraid the demos with the tomato(e)s, leather and rope blew the cutco edges away. Actually they seemed like good knives, but I drug him over to my PC and showed him the exact same set he wanted 800$ for on auction for 500$.

I hate to depress these guys.

I had a Cutco saleswoman at the house last night. I really got tired of correcting her on the practiced factory blurb. They actually say that their steel is the finest surgical stainless available  Doctors will pay $30 an inch for this steel? I flat out told her it was a crock of **** and pretty much false advertising. She was pretty shocked to see my BM 730 sail through the rope and leather with considerable ease compared to her "Double D's" (mind out of the gutters, this is what Cutco calls their serrations) ;) Anyway, I had a real good time opening her eyes. Too bad that they have to fill them full of that bullshit.

My brother sold Cutco for a significantly short while, my parents ended up buying his whole demo set, so we paid more for cutco than he ever made selling it.

That said they are actually good knives, just TREMENDOUSLY overpriced. I remember asking my brother what alloy Cutco used, he replied "High-Carbon Stainless Steel" (GROAN!), later I found out it was 440A, which actually impressed me, usually when you hear "High Carbon Stainless Steel" it means 420HC at best.
Oh well, my parents learned the lesson for me, and I buy Spyderco for my kitchen cutlery nowadays.

Had the same experience in a Shop Rite where they were selling similar serrated Ginsu style blades.

After I pulled out my BM AFCK, with 60/40 serrations and out cut him in every test, he gave me 2 knives and asked me to go away :D .

440a? damn thats pretty crappy for supposedly high end knives. hell good knives should have 440a for the handle!

How is 440a considered "high carbon" steel when it doesn't really have that high a carbon content. What is it compared to to be considered high?

An old friend of mine recently started working at CUTCO as a salesperson, and since she gets paid per presentation, I gladly sat for about 35 minutes listening to the presentation, and got to play with most of the knives. And yes, those knives are 440A, and they are pretty good, especially the handles, but at CDN$120 per knife it was a bit out of my price range... :D
Needless to say, on all tests my Spyderco Gunting outcut all of CUTCO sample knives by a long shot... :)
Met some other sealespeople there, and most were pretty nice. Sure they all said the same boring stuff about carbon steel and CUTCO guarantees, but they HAD to go by the book, that's what they get paid for.
Anywho, expensive knives, but some very nice people as well...
Just my same old CDN$0.02...

Chrono,

Near as I can tell, you are lucky if "high carbon" means "higher than 420", it's a trendy term like "Surgical Steel" that barely means anything.

Manji,

440A may not be as bad as you think for kitchen cutlery. Sure for an EDC knive it's pretty low-grade, but consider that most kitchen knives vary greatly in size and length, CPM440V really wouldn't do well in an 11" breadknife for example, the steel needs to be flexible to uses, and it needs to be pretty maleable to apply itself to so many different styles of knives... still i'd like to see how 440C would do in a kitchen cutlery role.

"High carbon" generally means >.5 C. 440A has about as much carbon as L-6 ... not that it performs like it, but you get the point.

YoungCutter,

I'll let you know how 440-C does soon :) I am just finishing 3 440-C knives for my sis and her soon-to-be husband as a wedding present. 1 paring, 1 4.5"ish wharncliffe utility and a fullly flat ground chef's knife, all my design. Look for a scan or 2 in less than 10 days :) I'll get feedback from them and post it too, good or bad. I hope it is good, 'cause I have 4 more sets of the smaller knives and 1 more chef's knife all blanked otu and some ground out!

We wrote about CUTCO before. The kids that sell for CUTCO are all generally great College type students who use FAMILY to formulate their sales contacts. They make a few bucks per demonstration and start hitting up the Aunts, Uncles, Grandparents, cousins and their best friend's parents.

The young man that had my wife and I sit through his demonstration is a wonderful and articulate Math and Computer major at a Fine college. He had the CUTCO super-duper set and when he said "$2,000, but if I paid him cash, he could go $1,600", I busted out laughing. The scizzors were $50.00!!!!.

In the end he was honest to tell us CUTCO charged him $1,000 for the $2,000 deluxe set and CUTCO probaly had $250.00 into the whole set-up. I flunked math, but their mark-up is obscene.

But their "Messengers" are all great kids who are forced to read from a CUTCO script and pre-buy all their own "Demo pieces". The only time they run into serious trouble is when they try the CUTCO crap on us knifeknuts!!!

Man...if I ever run into one of these Cutco guys and my knife doesn't outcut their's, then I'm going to feel reaaaallly, reaaaallly bad. I may even have to give up being a knife knut and throw the 2 g's at the super duper cutco set. Maybe that should be the initiation to be a knife knut--make the Cutco guys cry...:p

I don't think we even have those guys down here--is that a nationwide thing?

Crayola--I was just wondering about your wedding gift project...how's that coming along? Looking forward to seeing the pics.

My 18 year-old son is out there trying to sell Cutco to make some college bucks. I told him after listening to his pitch that he may run into some knife nuts that will correct him on some of the company's boasts as well as question the value. I didn't think to warn him that many of them would be arrogant and think it funny to brutally put down a kid who was just trying to earn some honest money. Maybe instead of slam-dunking the kid you could either take the opportunity to educate him a bit, or just sit there politely smug in your superior knowledge, say "no thank you", and he gets the $14 for trying to put towards the price of his demo set. By the way, if they return the demo set when they leave they get the money back. It is more of a deposit against reps walking with it. I bought the overpriced set, even though we have a full Wursthof Trident set. It may be the only full Homemaker set he sells. Yes I know they are on eBay for $400. What's new? Lots of things, including Benchmades and Emersons, sell on eBay at half of the normal selling price. Show a little grace and cut the kids some slack. Do you treat your kids with that level of disrespect? I hope not. Flame away bad boys - Lee

Geez, ease up whiner! The kid knew I was a knife guy and we had a good time. I showed him my collection and hes been over here swimming a couple times since then. I didn't show him any disrespect and wasn't being arrogant or "brutally" putting him down.

Happy Father's Day....

HUH????? I treated the young man with grace, he is my Son's roomate and a wonderful young Man. He tried to sell us the super deluxe set, which included every piece of cutlery made by Cutco, from Scissors to steak knives.

In the last thread we did about CUTCO [look in the archives] one kid took his CUTCO job to heart and argued the crap outta CUTCO and how wonderful they are.

In the end, the same message was delivered. CUTCO is a good set of knives that are seriously overpriced and the college kids out there trying to sell them are forced to use silly propaganda that does not work with someone who understands knives.

But no one has ever slammed the kids!!!!!

Happy Father's Day;)

Edited :spelling!!!
