I want a very grippy folder (flip auto is fine) with a 3 3.5" blade

Edit: This is the first knife that technically meets my criteria I've found but I'm unsure how strong it would be (joint, lock, and metal) https://sogknives.com/kilowatt/#tech-specs

I thought I had it figured out but alas now that it's getting colder and with the hand damage my current knife is a pita to hold. I want a curve at BOTH ends of the grip to help push/pull it fast.

Basically I want a single edge fixed blade that has a joint in it. That ideally has some level of finger grooves to really hold on when I'm in ice/snow/carpal tunnel flares up again. Then I'd want a sheath to carry it open. AIWB left side. 10 ish degrees away from horizontal.

I really liked the grip on my benchmade nimravus wish I'd gotten to keep it (even if it won't suit the needs here)

A really solid 3 or 3.5" knife with removable grip scales that I could get a sufficient grip for might suit me well too.

Thoughts?

Basically a grip like this but a folder that I"d then carry open https://amtacblades.com/the-minuteman/

Another good grippy fixed blade https://headhunterblades.com/collections/headhunter-blades-all/products/weapon-rat-training-package

Be even better if I could get a blue trainer too.

I have to answer that question with a question. What is your price range.? If you like flipper knives you could look at some USA made Kershaw's or zero tolerance. They make decent flippers. Since you have hand problems( I know this is not going to be popular) however, you can get a self-assisted flipper knife. It's a breeze to use one handed. Can you give a little more information on what the use of said knife would be? That would help edit
You said you wanted something that you could remove the scales?. No problem with them 2 brands. I take mine apart and clean them and sometimes change to spring from time to time with very little problems at all. I would also try to get something grippy made out of g10 or carbon fiber. I would also try to use my undamaged hand if I had one. With time it'll come natural to you.

I want to carry it open so I don't care how it opens. I care how strong it is open.

The scale was a thought that if I found the right knife and had to buy aftermarket G10 scales I'm not opposed but I suspect for most that would be very difficult.

The goal of the knife is to stop someone grabbing the gun. I'm wanting a flip style knife as I haven't found a OTF that doesn't jam easily with lint or has a good enough grip when temps hit 0 for my hand not to slip off. I originally wanted an OTF because then I didn't have to let go of the solid grip in a clinch to deploy it, well they don't work out so flip knife already open seems to be the right answer. Michigan makes it tricky with fixed blades. so an opening knife with a single edge it is.

170-400 I"d say is the range.

From what you describing I'm not sure if you're looking for a fixed blade or a folder. If you're looking for a folder with a flipper see above posts. If you're looking for a fixed blade I'd have to defer to someone else because I am far from knowledgeable on fixed blade knives. But with that price range you should be able to get what you want with no problem.

I’d recommend an Emerson. The grippiest g10 and best handle designs out there imo. Also most of his knives are designed for self defense. The handle on the horseman is my favorite of all my knives but you really can’t go wrong with almost all of his handle designs. They really lock the hand in.

amusingly enough I've been looking at pages and pages of knives and I found this. It does basically fullfill all my needs, except at $45 I wonder how strong the action and steel are. I mean the price worryingly low. https://sogknives.com/kilowatt/#tech-specs

I just went through 8 pages of his knives. not a single one meets my criteria. All the ones with grips that are suffience are 3.8" long. I guess I could get one and shorten it but seems weird to do that. CQC mini 15 does but its not a profile I really like its more a utility/chopper than a slash/stab thing. Nor can I find one for sale.

If you are looking for a blade that is going to be carried on your left side to prevent a gun grab on your right, go with a fixed blade. If an actual situation like this occurs, you are going to have fractions of a second or seconds to react with your knife as your right hand is pinned to your holstered gun, trying to prevent removal by your opponent. Forget flipping a knife open, you won’t have time.

These are two that I’ve settled on for exactly this role. The first is a Kbar TDI carried at my waist horizontally at my 11:30, with the handle facing out towards my left. The idea is that I can reach down at my waist, pull slightly to my left and the knife is out and ready to poke. Google Kbar TDI. There are lots of videos out there showing that this is much faster than any folder could ever be in this role. Cops carry this for this reason.

The second knife I carry is a TKell tanto. It’s also at my waist in this position but with the handle pointed towards my right. Accessible with both hands. It has a longer blade than the Kbar and it’s a fearsome stabber and slicer.

Edit: Ooops, reread the original post about the law issue. You need a folder or a fixed blade longer than 4 inches. Ok, how about a Cold Steel Spartan with a custom made sheath? The Triad lock on that Cold Steel is probably THE strongest lock on the market and will act closest to a fixed blade when under hard stabbing and slashing use than probably most other folders out there. That handle is very grippy, very ergonomic and you are locked in. If you want a shorter blade, you could always go for the Cold Steel Rajah 3. The handle is a bit different but still grippy

Kunwu Django or Padre with a custom sheath maybe. Grippy, textured handles available in G10 or titanium, under 3.5” blades, and reasonable price points, especially on the Django. Crosssbar lock for easy use in all conditions.

Yeah. Something like that or even the recon is where I would have gone as well.

For a defensive fixtie I think the Siwi is quite a good option.

For the angle carry. You can probably get a teck lock for pretty cheap that are kind of a universal fit.

Or really short. The cold steel tuff lite. Which has mabye a 2 inch wharncliffe. With all the SD technology that goes with that.

If I'm reading this right, you want to carry an open folder in a sheath like a fixed-blade, but not an actual fixed-blade because carrying a fixed-blade is illegal where you are.

If that's a correct reading, I'm curious to know where it's illegal to openly carry a fixed-blade, but legal to openly carry an open folder in a sheath.

I think the issue might be “open” carry. Not sure the OP mentioned anything about carrying visibly. Here in CA for example, you can carry any sized folder concealed whereas a fixed blade must be visible. So, a folder that is locked open in a sheath allows me to carry anything and any size I want (double edged daggers excluded). Makes a certain kind of sense.

I just want to throw this out there. You could get a push dagger. It's an excellent tool for people with bad hands and no knife fighting experience. It has a grippy krayton handle. Pulls out of it's sheath a split second. And is used by police officers as a secondary backup weapon . When I got my first one I wasn't happy with it too much. I didn't give it enough time to appreciate what it did and what it was. I've had hand problems too. But I don't have hand problems anymore because they cut one off. If it works for a one-handed man it should work for you. Of course this is all conjecture. Something to look into for sure, I've been using the Dickens out of mine.(Cold steel) Whatever you decide I hope you are happy with your decision. With all of the data that I have discovered I believe this would probably be your best bet, Cold steel sells quite a few different models of a push dagger I'm sure they'll have something that will satisfy you. Sometimes I open carry it and sometimes I use it concealed. this particular model is a four and a half inch blade. this is just food for thought. this is obviously double edged. But they make single edge models as well. as far as strength it's pretty strong and tough. I don't think it could be broken unless it's broken on purpose. PS in my jurisdiction if you are disabled or defenseless you can carry whatever you want whenever you want. At least Puerto Rico recognized that disabled people often fall victim to crime. The 2020 weapons act has alleviated this problem.IMG_20231011_154926_01.jpg

Yes that does make sense. Depending on your jurisdiction it is highly illegal. There was one case down south in Florida, where a lady had an open folding knife in her purse. From my recollection she was charged with weapons violations. But I can't remember the case well enough to give you the details, but she was convicted.
