IDENTIFYING SCHRADE Uncle Henry L7 and L8 knives

I know that Schrade was bought out and that then it went international.

I hope that this is an easy question for someone to answer!

I see the following stamps on the tang:

"Uncle Henry
SCHRADE+
LB7 USA"

some say

"SCHRADE +
LB7 USA" and then have a serial number stamped onto the metal portion of the handle

some say

"SCHRADE +
LB7 USA" and then have NO SERIAL NUMBER

I've seen some that say

"Made in New York" somewhere on the tang.

Can someone tell me what the different styles of stamping mean? Which ones are original to the original manufacturer? When did they add the "+" after the word SCHRADE? is the + mean that they're the newer ones?

Help!!

Thanks a lot from some hapless single female in Texas who just loves her first knife ever which was . . . as you can guess . . . an Uncle Henry by Schrade that some jackass stole and I'm trying to replace it.

Welcome Kelli!

The older ones did not say Uncle Henry in script, and the SCHRADE+ is a stamp that indicates Stainless Steel. Usually if it says just SCHRADE, it is carbon steel. All LB7 knives were stainless.

They started making them in 1979, up until they closed in 2004. They lower the serial number, the earlier the date of MFG. At some point they quit putting serial numbers on them. The older ones usally have 4 pins holding on the wooden handles, but that is not set in stone.

There are some great threads in here regarding the LB7.

This one is probably the most intensive.

There is a ton more info, this is just off of the top of my head.

As long as an LB7 knife has U.S.A. stamped on the tang, it will be a good American knife of excellent quality, no matter what year it was made. If it doesn't say U.S.A. then.....:grumpy::mad::(:thumbdn:

Tut, tut. I'm reasonably sure I bought my four digit LB7 (7100) at Cravens Gun Haven brand new in 1977. I still have it btw. ;)

Not too bad for a 37 year old knife that was carried and used every day for at least the first twenty years of its life. ;)

PS, My apologies to thawk, I called my buddy that used to work at Cravens back then and he said it had to be between 1979 & 1980 as the store wasn't open in 1977 so the knife is only 35 years old.
So much for my memory.

I have one that looks exactly like the one Thawk posted except on the tang it has Uncle Henry and below that it has SCHRADE+. Could that be a Canadian thing?

Hello, I own an LB7 which reads Uncle Henry (1st line), schrade + (2nd), and LB7 USA (3rd). There is also an oval emblem on the wood handle that reads "Safety First". It is embedded flush on the handle and the emblem appears to be made of copper. It has three pins on the handle and one on the bolster. Any idea of its age and if the emblem was part of the manufacture as in a special edition? All help is appreciated.
