iron can be a green power source? ... really

That's very interesting, it says the efficiency is theoretically around 40%, which is higher than the average efficiency for coal. I look forward to hearing about the real world results.

There is no way burning iron will produce more energy than it takes to refine the rust. Then add in the original refining process and it will end up being worse then oil

Even if they just used scrap steel/iron you still need to turn it into a fine powder which is likely power hungry too. The wouldn't be sustainable as iron is a valuable resource in other markets and it is not as plentiful as oil or as easy to transport. It would suck if we had a steel shortage at the same time we would be sitting on a large pile of rust

It is a neat idea that should be studied further but I doubt this can work on a large scale

The trick is finding stuff to "burn" that's in a high energy state already. Like coal and oil. Stuff that is already "chilled out" like iron oxide, magnesium oxide, aluminum oxide and such is spent. Perhaps could be "recharged" as a type of battery, but at what cost?

it sounds like the brewery is going to do just that, 'recharge' passively (solar or wind or whatever)?

anyway, glad to see someone trying new ideas - there are always more things to figure out
