Is N690CO a super steel.

Sure. Its a "Super Steel." Its a meaningless marketing term with no real definition, so why not?

You know full well where the lines are here but this is close to earning you another trolling infraction. It still might depending on how I feel later. Keep the nonsense where it belongs.

I am fairly certian that I read that Bohler N690 is very similar to Something like VG10.

As for 'super steel' I am not really sure what that means, or what that terms relevance is?

I think the best starting point would be to pair a steel that suits your needs the best......

Just bought a $500 custom that utilizes this steel (first knife I've owned with it) and it has been my edc since the day it arrived. I like it and I'll say it's a step up from 154cm and VG-10.

I'm in the same boat. My previous edc were Elmax and S30V. The 690 seems like it's easier to sharpen. As far as I can tell (not scientific, subjective) it seems to hold an edge just as well. It doesn't see hard use, papers/boxes/food prep. I don't know if it's super but it's become my favorite knife so for me the steel is just fine if you like the knife it's on!

The only knife I have in N690 is a SigTac Pterodactyl but I can tell you I am pretty pleased with this steel. Not hard to sharpen and it takes a very keen edge. Sadly, this knife is no longer being produced so I'm glad I got one when I did because I absolutely love this thing. The photo below was taken back when I was a wannabe knife photgrapher lol.

Also, here's an old thread on N690... http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/420968-What-is-the-deal-with-N690-steel

I once had a production blade in this steel and, for some reason, was able to ask a pretty high price for it when I sold it, based on interest in the steel type alone. I didn't use the knife in ways that most here would consider "hard use" (though to be fair, I don't think there are set definitions either for it, or "super steel"). I guess it's a pretty good steel and my light use never saw any issues. And people seem to like it.

Personally, I think "super steel" really means "whatever current steels are hot right now." If someone made a great alloy of 440CXTriplePlatinum1 tomorrow and a lot of people had to have it, it would be a brand new super steel.

The Boker Haddock uses it in a very thin edge and grind. I have cut very hard plastics with it cringing because I'm expecting damage. I haven't gotten any real dings yet, impressive.

I have one EDC knife in N690 but I didn't get it just because of that. (But it was a 'kewl' factor.)

So far it's an excellent slicer (extreme hollow grind) but I haven't, and won't, use it for anything else, ie no bushcraft or hard use.

H1 and N690 are the only non-rusting steels I know and I have examples of both and both have proven excellent.

Your other thread is still open man, posting is still going on. I notice you made this thread around the same time though, did the other not post right away?

No, I just prefer not to read what the riffraff have to say. This is a knife forum. Some are allowed to run like a wild child. Haven't and won't re open that thread. Looking for serious to the point experiences from those that have it. If it's a dud I'll skip it, if not it's a good price on a slip joint light use 2" blade and I usually carry a lighter use blade in the left pocket. Seen a good price on a knife that meets light use criteria but I never even held or used that steel. Figured someone here would have.

The other thread needs to be moved to W&C based on the early response.

There is good converse in the other thread. No need to irritate decent people by calling them trolls & riffraff.

Did you read the first reply? Looks like riff raft and a troll to me.

Starting to look like this one will need to be moved to W&C too because it looks as if no one on a knife forum is interested in talking about knives.

Best I can come up with from google foo is info from a guy who made over 500 blades in that steel. Says its like 440C and acts like ATS34. I had that steel before and was not impressed by it that much. So going by that I will skip it. Looks like this place is not going to provide a purely knife conversation so it may as shut this thread down. Pretty sure a guy who made more than 500 knows what they are talking about.

Maybe the two of you can get together and talk about how the both of you know more than anybody else, all your experience, etc...

Keep it civil. Answer the question. One thread per topic.

Boris,
Here is some info for you. You keep saying this steel, that steel, It depends on the application and of course, The heat treatment.
What RC is this treated to?
BOHLER N690 is from Austria.
Our best conventionally produced stainless knife steel. Great value in a corrosion resistant knife steel with excellent edge holding capabilities. Additions of chromium and vanadium enhance edge holding capability, while cobalt and carbon help to retain high hardness. Hardens and tempers to 57-59 HRC and 60-62 HRC with deep freeze. For maximum toughness, harden and temper to 57-59 HRC. For maximum wear resistance, harden and temper to 60-62 HRC
.

Also almost all of these air hardening Stainless Steels are in the Linage of 440C, ATS-34, CPM-154 etc. 440c is the grand daddy of them all so to speak.

I'm sure this steel is more than adequate if HTed properly, I've made a few hunters with it and the buyers are extremely happy, but I honestly don't know if N690 wears a mask & cape, so it may not be a Super Steel?
