Jacket/pants recs for cold weather hunting?

gurushaun,

If you've been living in the UK you are already on the right track.

Just think colder with more snow in the Winter.

More layers of wool, some kind of wind resistant/ water resistant outer layer.

When you get to Vermont, note the way the locals who work outdoors are dressed. Not the "fashionable" people just the regular Farmers, Construction guys, Fishermen and Hunters. The people who are out in the elements for hours at a time, not the guy who pops out of his truck for ten minutes.

Might want to look at Sorrel or LaCross, felt lined/rubber/leather "pacs" (boots) for outdoors in the winter.

Go easy on the "wonder fabric hi-tech" stuff. Most of it is over priced and not really all that usefull (most of it comes in nice colors though!)

You will figure it out almost immediately. Just remember, no cotton in the winter!

Good Luck

I have a Filson Double Mackinaw Cruiser, which I absolutly love. It's incredibly warm, comfortable, and quiet. The nice thing is I could wear it on a day like today, 45* and rainy, and not overheat. If I wear a heavy wool sweater underneath I'm comfortable even in the dead of winter (~5 below and breezy).

I have to vote for King of the Mountain wool as well. I just got back from a trip to Alaska and used their jacket and pants. I was plenty warm. I wore polypro long johns under the wool pants. For waterproofing I had a pair of saddle cloth pants that fit over top. On top I wore polypro shirt, OD wool sweater and the wool jacket. Over top of this wore a Goretex parka from Cabellas.

Let me tell you that goretex parka paid for itself on the first use. I had to ride a few miles on an ATV in freezing rain. When I got back my wool underneath was dry as a bone. Several times I had to walk for a few hundred yards in knee deep snow to get to where we were going to hunt. This generated sweat because I was dressed to sit. The goretex allowed that moisture to pass through and kept me dry on the inside. It is well worth the investment. Mac

HIGH TECH ISN'T USUALLY CHEAP. CABELAS WHITETAIL EXTREME MTO- 50 PARKA AND BIBS PLUS A SET OF THEIR HEAVYWEIGHT THERMALS WILL RUN ABOUT 800.00. :D :) :p

Unless you're "made of money." why would you ever pay full list price? Just about every garment ends up 50% off or more due to sales or from at all-the-time discounters like Sierra Traders.

Nylon shell (THAT'S where the wind barrier belongs.), fleece-lined, hooded coats are about $25 at Wallyworld today. 200 wt zip-front fleece jackets with adjustable pull cords at the bottom at $12.xx. When Patagonia appeared with fleece 20-odd years ago, it was 100 1984 dollars for a fleece jacket.
