Kephart Design Thread

Here you go, Andy. Right from the book.

I find it interesting to note that he writes about grinding "the front part of the back of mine to a blunt bevel edge" and didn't think too much of the sheath.

I'm afraid that design does nothing for me and I can't see how it could compete with the current versions when it comes to cutting wood.
IMO Stomper is the current Kephart king in much the same way that Andy ( Fiddleback ) is the Nessmuk king, however I love the way that each maker brings subtle parts of their own style into each version.
This version by Charlie Ridge really caught my eye and for some reason it is my favourite so far from a visual point of view !

Jeez Pit. That sheath is a beauty. I'll be doing the one from the magazine article. That upswept is just not calling out to me at all. It seems corporate and provential. I will post pics today of the outline drawing I came up with. We can comment and I'll surely redraw it a couple of times. Then we'll make it up.

What the heck does 'I ground the front part of the back of mine" actually mean anyway????

Doc - thanks for the scan. Very good research and one of the reasons why forums like this work. Just so much better then someone pasting a ream of wikipedia at you....

Here is a pic of yesterday's drawing.

5" blade, 4.75" handle, 1/8" thick 01 steel, blade 1.25" wide.

Right on Andy. That looks about perfect to me.

Add a choil, and im sold;)

Hey Andy, how about trying a version where you keep more belly toward the front and taper the top back down toward the handle ?
I have done a drawing to try and explain but you will notice that I'm no Picasso !!!!

How big is your knife there Pit? It looks to me like one of those medical Marine bolo's, but maybe I have the scale wrong. I'm planning to do a chopper, bolo style. That looks close to what I had in mind. It would be a big honkin som bit thoguh.

That is exactly what I thought when I first saw Gossman introduce it back into the mainstream a few years ago. Since then only a few makers have reproduced it.:)

-RB

Dan Shecthman was the one who asked me to reproduce it for him in 2006. He wanted to write about the Kephart knife along side the Nessmuk in a Backwoodsman mag article.

Andy, I'm sure whatever you come up with will be a winner.

"Double, double choil and trouble
Fire burn, and cauldron bubble."

Shakespeare agreed with you, Andy. :)

LOL ! Yeah I told ya I'm no artist !:o My scales is off, I was thinking of a 4 1/2-5" blade with a handle of 5" or so !!!

Here ya go Andy, MK2....I have tried to get the scale a little closer this time !

I just realised that my design is now starting to resemble my MOD4 ! Maybe that's what I'm looking for a shorter, thinner MOD4 without the guard ?

Yea. I like that knife too. Lookin more and more like a Nessmuk though...

Im likin the idea of the MOD with no guard. Looks very keppy like.

Pit, man thats a sweet knife. Id like to find me one of them.

Looks like a green river knife. I think it is called a dadley "sp" only with scalloping on the back. We use them during mountainman historical reinacting. A no nonsense user, poker, utility knife. Very basic. not as user friendly as the Nessmuck for skinning and gutting, the hump gets the nod there. Loosearrow
