Heads of 41 Maoists found around airport in Acham

Decapitated heads of at least 41 Maoist rebels have been found around fields of Saphebhagar airport attacked and destroyed by Maoist rebels in Acham district overnight, a reporter for Nepal Television said quoting eyewitnesses Sunday.

Overnight fighting in district headquarters Mangalsen ended at 9.30 AM Sunday, he said after returning from Mangalsen. Reinforcement soldiers and policemen have fanned out into the nearby jungle to hunt down the rebels in mopping up operations, he said.

He also said several hundreds rebels may have died, quoting eyewitnesses saying they saw rebels flee with the dead and injured in baskets carried piggyback. nepalnews.com br Feb.17

A departing tourist, interviewed at the airport, claimed some months back that he had witnessed Maoists beheading some of their own dead, following a shootout near Annapurna. The speculation was that it was intended to hide either their identities or nationality. Nepal probably doesn't have an extensive fingerprint database, if any, so this would seperate the dead from still-living "known associates", and stymie follow-up investigations. Or, maybe they've uncovered a weird souvenir hunter...couldn't have happened to nicer guys, anyhoo
