Knife for a Border Patrol agent

A leatherman mut or wave and a good hard-use folding knife. The 0560 would be perfect. But so would a benchmade triage because of the strap cutter. Or you could buy a separate strap cutter. I know a few LEO's and they say strap cutters are a life saver.

My vote is for a ZT 0200 and a leatherman wave. The ZT is a tank and will not break if he has to do some prying. before I retired on our ERT team I carried a ESEE 5 strapped on my vest. Just my opinion.

If you know his taste get him what he likes. I think any hard use folder would do him fine. And when I say hard use a griptillian would do. Nothing wrong with any of the emersons, zt or spydies. There is no perfect knife for a leo in my 5 year experience. A multitool is never a bad idea either I probably used one alot more when I was in the military. Even if he just carries it in his bag or vehicle. I carry my sng alot at work because im into knives and like it. But I also carry my cold steel recon 1 and code 4 just for the fact if I mess it up I dont care. It does everything I need a knife to do and its easily replaceable and inexpensive. But, your original thoughts nothing wrong with that, after he gets his post he'll figure out what he needs and wants to carry. And if you get him something that he likes and doesnt want to beat up he can carry it off duty.

A fully serrated Endura would be a good choice. Since folks are suggesting the ZT knives I will provide an alternative. It might be more utilitarian then you want, but the Victorinox Dual Pro X would be a very useful gift. This knife includes a large cutting blade, a fully serrated blade that would be useful for seatbelts or bandages, and other typical SAK items.

The 0560 would be a good choice. The Spyderco Military or Paramilitary 2 would also be good options.

Thanks to his girlfriend's help and a little chat with my friend, I found out he really like the HEST 2.0 folder, so I'm getting him one of those. I hadn't considered it at first (mostly out of sheer ignorance about it), but he seems to by quite taken by it. For the multitool, I'm going with a LM Rebar, it's got a nice tool selection, is tough and isn't very heavy (plus he liked the ST300 except for the heft, so this should work).

Cheers for all the sound advice.
