Hi. I just graduated army infantry osut and am going to airborne hold Monday. I was wondering if I could have a knife there, and what knife would be a good choice. Im trying to keep it around 150. Thanks

If I remember correctly, we were not allowed to have knives when I went through as well. You're not going to need one anyway.

Well, now that we've settled that, any advice? I'm going to be in airborne hold for two weeks starting monday. After airborne i'll be in SF holdover till september. Does anyone have any advice on what i could get, or what i could do for either?

When I was in combat in VN we were not allowed to have any knife bigger than Swiss Army for fear we might kill somebody. I believe it was company commander policy, but it was the same in both field units I was in. When you get to each new unit, inquire and then go buy something at the PX or Walmart. And prepare to lose it when you go to a new unit.

And my Swiss army knife got stolen while working on a weapons cleaning detail. Now I only buy the $15 ones.

I've got the boots down. I just got a pair of Rocky sv2's that i like, but need to be broken in, and the ones they've issued. We didn't do too much running in osut, and my 2 mile is at 13 minutes right now, but once i get time to work on it, i will. I suck at rucking though, and from what i hear, that's basically what you do in selection. Even just airborne school is feeling overwhelming right now. What kind of shape where you guys in when you went through airborne school? Was it that hard?

'73 here, you got me beat Russ.

Didn't have time to think about knives or much of anything else when I went thru. Got stuck in a two week accelerated class for Reservists and National Guard.

LOL........there'll be no shortage of that..!

As for a knife...as said, You won't need one in jump school.

...I went through in '66.

I went to Air Assault school and Airborne school before Ranger school and I could max the APFT easily. If you suck at rucking, selection is going to be hard, to put it mildly. Air Assault school (Fort Belvore) was harder for me than Aiborne school. We had timed 13 mile ruck runs. If you don't know who you are yet, you will after selection. Good luck!

100% CORRECT! Even if you can max your APFT and run 5 minute miles you will not be ready for SFAS unless you are comfortable with long distances and a 75 lbs ruck. Start rucking now and try to put on a little extra weight if possible as you burn way more calories then the 2 MREs you get to eat each day. Do pull ups, rope climb, and practice your land nav at night.

Thanks guys! I had a 297 on the apft last time i took it, and have only gotten stronger, but i'm still not a great rucker. That being said, i do still have a couple of months till i even start socp. I'm going to grab a ruck and walk till my legs fall off. I'll never quit, but even if i don't make it (not an option), i'm still proud to be an infantryman now, and if i make it through airborne, that would be amazing. All i need now is to train. Thanks gentlemen.

Remember that ALL of the selection/qualfication courses for special ops are really just an extended mindfuck until they get the class down to the number of people that they feel comfortable actually training. Well, except for Ranger school where they only have a limited amount of time and therefore have to fuck with you up right up until graduation.:D Sometimes they end up with fewer than they intended, but such is life. Just get yourself physically ready and when you get to Bragg, be ready for ANYTHING. This can probably range from the standard Ranger school sleep and food deprivation to the old "end of cycle exercise" tricks like having you march/run with a ruck for 50 or so miles and when you get within 20 feet of the truck, it drives another 10 miles down the road to the old ambush patrol trick where you haven't eaten for a day or two and the boxes of rations that you took from the ambushed truck and then humped several clicks through the woods to your rally point contain only sand or garbage. I have heard of at least a couple of guys wandering off in the woods babbling and crying like a 2 year old after that last trick. I hear tell that the SF guys are notorious for not telling you what the standards are for particular excercise like land navigation and then leaving you to wonder whether you have flunked out.
