Knife Retailers...... Part DUH!

I have only used two knife dealers whom have web sites. One has a modest site, but will always give you the best price, and charges only $3 for priority shipping, and ships it FAST!

The other had a special on a knife that I wanted, but charged $5.49 for shipping and handling, and it took 3 WEEKS to get here via third class mail! The other place takes 2-3 days!

Needless to say I will be purchasing most of my knives from the first dealer. He has always tried to satisfy me. I will continue to do business with him.

Gregj62,

You made a good point. Although the chances are quite slim that anything would happen we are listening and watching this thread. As all we have room to improve. We are far from perfect but we do try really hard. So from this day on we will mark through the last for digits of the CC number.

Many of the things we do at ABC are simply because we are consumers too and this is the only income we have. So it is important to us that we do a good job and listen to our customers and the customers of others.

Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and Happy New Year!

Your point about Jim Mattis is well put, Jim; he is truly a honest, concerned gentleman. I have yet to order anything from him, but wouldn't hesitate to do so.

My two favorite internet dealers are Northwest Cutlery, from whom I get most of my mid to low end stuff. They are friendly, honest, informative, and a pleasure to do business with. Things are shipped rapidly and arrive in good condition.

Arizona Custom Knives is my other favorite dealer. I have ordered several top end items from them, and each has been as described, delivered promptly and in good conditon. Their catalog, which they mail, is useful, as well as their website catalog. I just got a Chris Reeve Large Sebenza with tear drop Damascus. While I was waiting to call them, I just thought I would look through their catalog they had mailed me. WOW! A Kit Carson folder with Stellite blade and C-fiber scales; I just had to add that on! While talking to Jay, I asked him if he had any Mad Dog Knives. He said he had just got an ATAK2 in the day before. Bingo! another addition. The knives arrived, four days before Christmas, less than 24 hours after my call!!

I use a credit card with most dealers out of convenience. Some want money orders or cashier's checks, and I have no problem with providing them, IF I know the dealer is reliable.

I have had only one bad experience with a dealer; he supplied me with knives I felt to be not as advertised. I asked for, and obtained permission to return them for correction. After 3 months, and no knives, I asked him for a refund. He agreed, by e-mail, then reneged. Fortunately, my credit card company issued a charge back to my account. The merchant was allowed to state his case, which in the final version was that the knives were perfect, he had received them back, but still wanted payment (they were not custom made). Needless to say, the credit card company sided with me.

I don't worry about credit card numbers being stolen. I am not liable for any fraudulent charges, and they keep close tabs on charges; I received a call the day following my order with AZCK, from the credit card fraud division wanting to know if it was a valid order.

Thanks to all of you internet dealers with whom I have done business. You are a good bunch, and I wish you well. Walt

AZCK gets my top vote.

Jay and Karen are very helpful (they make a good team), and ship very promptly. They are well aware that many of us purchase impulsively!

Not only does the package arrive quickly, but because of the quality of the knives they carry, you know its' gonna be a good one!

Truly some of the best knives on the net...as a bonus their prices are fair.

This is my first posting to this forum and I hate to start out by bitching, but my recent experience with buying from a company called UWS has been quite frustrating and I just need to vent my anger and maybe get some feedback on how to proceed. So here it goes:

Early September I called said company to order some Gerber knives. I was told they had everything I wanted in stock, no problem, they would ship right away.

Being located in Germany, I figured I'd give the shipment about three weeks for transport and clearing customs. Nothing, nada, null. OK, lets give 'em another call to see what the status is. Order? What order? Sorry, your order number isn't in our computer. Grumble, grumble, repeat order. And please check the knives before they go out, so I won't have to go through the hassle of returning anything.

Another three or four weeks pass, then finally a notice from the local customs office that the shipment has arrived. Great! Not!!

The grind of the Covert I ordered is bad at the tip, not acceptable. Another call to UWS. The friendly lady is very sorry, yes, we'll send you a replacement right away (today!). I sent the defective knife back the next day.

Well, you guessed it, more weeks pass and nothing. A further call to UWS. Oh hi, yes we got your knife yesterday and we'll send you the replacement right away. Excuse me? Whatever happened to the promise of three weeks ago? Ah yes, the boss said we'd have to wait until we got your knife back before sending out the replacement. (Right, don't bother telling me about it. Ever hear of email?)

OK, the requisite amount of time passes again until the replacement arrives (we're nearing a total of almost three months from my original order).

Surely everything is fine now? Ha, sucker, don't you wish. They now sent me the OLD version of the Covert, with the clip on the left (i.e. 'wrong' IMO) side and the interlock button in the right side of the handle! Trying to get rid of old stock by sending it to the Old World, eh?

I won't even go into the details about the hassle of having to pay customs fees again, since they didn't bother to clearly mark the package as being a replacement, as I had explicitly requested. Try to get money back from the government (any government). Can you say 'paperwork'?

So here this sad little story ends, for the time being at least. Opinions?

Thanks for listening,

TC
Baden-Baden, Germany

PS: A copy of this will be sent to UWS for comment, I'll keep you posted.

Hopefully UWS will respond and explain their position ont the matter. I have repeatedly told people that comuntication is always paramount in any situation.

BTW, I was born in Weisbaden which is just outside Franfurt. Army brat... Go figure..
