This was in today's Palm Beach Post. A damn tragedy for that guy and his family. To bad he didn't have a knife clipped to his wet suit.

RIVIERA BEACH -- A man who drowned Tuesday afternoon at Ocean Reef Park when his surfboard tether tangled in a marker buoy has been identified as Paul Libert, 30, of Margate. Strong currents apparently trapped Libert under water and he couldn't reach his Velcro ankle release, lifeguards said. Lifeguards eventually freed him but the currents swept them southward about 100 yards before they could get him to shore.

I always carry a knife diving, kayaking, rafting, etc. Usually more than one. However, if the guy couldn't reach the velcro release because the current was pulling him, I'm not sure he could have reached the line to cut it?
