How To Lanyard attachment

I just purchased a Benchmade Bushcrafter, it came without a lanyard. I would like to attach one similar to the way Gene Ingram did on his knives that I have. There is a piece of leather looped through the hole, and the two pieces are joined with a piece of antler. There is no knot just the piece of antler. Did he some how get some glue in there. How is the antler affixed to the leather?
