I have a 1/4" thick leaved leaf spring. I starightened and annealed 1 leaf. Am I right in remembering that leaf springs were 5160. Cory

Usually. In any case the ones I have used have worked fine using 5160 heat treating and anealing.

i've heard that pre-1970 leaf springs are almost exclusively 5160 but after 1970, they started making them out of any one of several spring steels..

Cory,

It could be made from a number of different steels, before you spend a lot of time working it into a knife, bring the end of the leaf up to critical heat and quench it in ATF, then see if it has hardened using a file and then try to break the end off. If I using a leaf from a strange source I heat to critical, quench and then lay the end over my anvils edge and hit it, if it snaps off I know its good for a knife.

Good luck

Bill
