Figured I might as well throw my $.02 in here. I have the fold up leather hat by Minnetonka, and I love it for some, but not all of my outdoor activities. I usually wear it in the spring and fall at large group outings where we have rather large bonfires. I'm one of the guys who builds and maintains the fires, and a leather hat with a wide brim is awesome when you need to go in and reposition some logs or throw some more on. Just duck your head and the brim protects your face from the heat. It also does just fine at keeping my head warm enough when away from the fire on a chilly evening. I've never gotten it wet enough to have any problems with the weight, but it keeps my glasses dry in a light rain, and that's all that's really important to me when I'm out in the rain anyway. All of that having been said, when it gets hot or when I'm hiking rather than car camping I wear a boonie hat, and in the winter I wear a nice Woolrich stocking hat. The leather has it's place, but it's definitely limited.
