Wipe it good in "Marine Tuf-Cloth" "Wiping with MARINE TUF-CLOTH gives you cleaning, rust protection and lubrication." Then putting it in a Cotton bag or rag should do the thing.
I definitely would not keep a sword in an all leather sheath. Some of them especially ones that are vegetable tanned contain acids in the leather that can hurt some sword blades. In my opinion (and admittedly I'm biased) wooden core scabbards are the best way to go for scabbards.
Triton;
I see you make sheaths for swords.
I sell Criswell Swords. I would love to have a wood sheath of a 31".
How long would it take you to make one?
Why don't you shoot me an email (address is on the website) and we can talk? I try not to discuss business here on the forum to much since I am not really paying for the privilege of being here. Thanks for the interest!
