Lifetime warranty question

So I have been reluctant to use or even carry my precious sebenza for fears of warranty issues. I bought the 21 thinking I would have a knife forever and if anything should happen, it would be covered. Well what if my blade snaps or cracks or whatever?. Will crk have a new blade for me? When I bought my 21 last year I didn't know it was soon to be discontinued. I might not have bought it if I knew that. Now it's an irreplaceable safequeen that I really wanted to carry into my old age....

I seriously doubt your going to snap the blade on you Seb. What scale does it have? if its a special design maybe then only carry on special occasions.

Other than that, Use that dude! take care of it, it will take care of you. :)

If something happens CRK will take care of you.

People carry and use out of production regular/classic/P/original sebenzas all the time. While you or I cannot just call and order a new blade I would imagine they have more than a couple of them stashed away for any warranty issues that arise in the future. If you use your knife for it’s intended purpose it’ll last you a lifetime and you aren’t likely to snap the blade.

Here is the CRK warranty page:

If it was an issue with their material and the blade breaks it looks to be covered. Read the other items and you judge for yourself if you think what could happen would be covered.

Just use the knife.

I recently found myself at a crossroads that resulted in me with this same dilemma - use a L21 chainmail (100% LNIB) or keep it on the shelf. There will always be more, awesome knives to take its place should the unthinkable happen. Use it! Mine went onto my pocket and once I knock the new off it, there will be no looking back. I already sharpened the factory edge away.

There is something about making that knife yours and using it that will far outweigh the regret of having to retire it.

While very unlikely you will need a blade replacement, they should have blades for warranty work for some time. At some point they will stop doing spa work that could result in the need for a new blade, such as replacing thumb studs.
Unless ultra rare model, I would use it. It may last forever in a drawer, but what good is that going to do you. If after a long life it needs to be replaced(with a new purchase), you will have gotten you moneys worth.
One area I would be conscious of is over sharpening. Many over sharpen when stropping would be enough-save that blade material. You may be glad you did 20 years from now.

Everyone bitches and moans about CRK's hardness being on the low side, but yet very few of their knives experience a broken blade. I've read about a few that have broke near the thumb studs.
Maybe hairline crack from press fitting the studs is the likely culprit. Breaking a blade is the least of my worries. I worry more about losing a CRK than breaking a blade.
I'm sure CRK has an finite number of 21 blades for warranty purposes and when those are gone, someone will have to cross that bridge. They haven't had blades for the regulars for some time now. I believe they mentioned making some, but I don't know if that happened.
That hasn't stopped anyone from using their regulars. What good is having one that you don't use ? Wipe the dust off that gorgeous knife, put it in your pocket and enjoy it. As long as you don't get stupid with it, you'll probably be able to pass it on in 20 years.

And just for clarification for those who don’t know....

My snapped/broken blade wasn’t from faulty material or a warranty claim. There was a couple incidents that led up to it. Carelessness to put it nicely

This is never mentioned here, but is a fact. With the modern programmability of CNC machines, there is no issue doing a run of 21 blades in the future if they need blades to cover warranty. It’s not like the process is drastically different. They may not make any money doing so, but you don’t make money on warranty repairs to begin with.

Sebenzas should be used. A Sebenza hidden in a safe is like a dog kept in a bird’s cage.

Use the knife, there is a reason they work so well and last so long. If you're going to have to abuse it, get a fixed blade or throw down. I have early models I carry regularly to enjoy, knowing I won't abuse my own knife or EVER lend it.

Well that's pretty stupid.

They announced right before the release of the 31 ( I think ) that replacement blades will no longer be sold/available. In the past you could buy an extra blade. You can buy a Damascus blade and they’ll send the S35VN back. And there’s your extra blade ;)

I have owned hundreds of CRK, with about 70% of them being folders. I only ever had 1 blade failure where the edge literally broke out in chunks. I sent it to CRK and they replaced the blade. The cause for the breakage was that it was ground too thin behind the edge. Chris was there at the time and said it was a very rare for this to happen. He did not have BG-42 Blades in stock so it was replaced with S30V. I also take care when I use my folders and know they are not screwdrivers or pry bars. They will serve you well.

The only other breakages I have seen that were kinda freak things is them cracking at the thumb stud due to them being press fit.
*This is not counting the ones I have seen broken from very high drops or being used to pry

Everyone has different ideas with their knives. Some like to admire them as safe queens handling them with white gloves while others admire them in use when getting them dirty. That choice is yours.
