Ok, mall-ninja and troll comments aside...
Ka-Bar does not make garbage, (though I think the thorn needs improvement), and they are a good place to start. I wouldn't say the BEST place but not bad. If you use it properly, your Ka-Bar might last long enough for your grandkids to admire it and it will certainly do what a quality knife should. Go for the Ka-Bar, just try to keep an open mind when people who are passionate about knives make suggestions as to how a responsible person handles/uses a knife.
There is no 'secret club' and we are not wierdos for having a better understanding of knives than most people. Owning a Busse knife because a lot of other people do and swear by them may not appeal to you but owning a Busse because they are simply a great knife should. Personally, I'm into Chris Reeves knives not because of the fan-clubs, legends, etc. that surround CRK products but because I've used them and found them to be pretty damn good compared to knives like, GASP, Ka-Bar.
My advice; Buy the Ka-Bar and hold on to it as your 'nice knife' and don't go digging with it. Buy the trench or knuckle knife and use the crap out of it. It's my guess that in short time, you'll find that the knuckle knife is really kind of silly and not very comfortable to use for ANYTHING. If, after using it for a year or two, you still love your knuckle-knife then you obviously didn't need any of our help in finding a good knife. From there, you can take the handles of of both knives and modify the Ka-Bar tang to fit into the rat-tail slot of the knuckle handle...
