Marlin vs Henry/ 30-30 vs .44mag question.

Very good information has been given. My experience is with Marlins. I have a .35 Remington, .44 mag & a ported Guide gun in 45/70. I shot my first deer with a 30/30 and it performed great, little recoil. The .35 is a good cartridge. One shot kills on hogs. The .44 mag hurts my shoulder and shoots pistol bullets which do not always hold up. Unless you shoot hard cast, they are not good game "getters". The 45/70 I like and you can go mild to wild, with different factory loads. If you are not going after big game, (bear, moose) I suggest a 30/30 or the .35 Rem for deer. The ammo is cheaper, easier on the shoulder, and old Marlins are available in these calibers.

Just a few minutes ago i bought a Marlin model 30AW off a online auction site. It's a 30-30 and the pictures look really good. I will just have to wait and see but it looks really clean. At this point i can only hope.
I will post photos when i get it and i want to say thanks for all the information and advice that i have been given here. I am pretty excited about the purchase and hope the wait doesnt drive me crazier than i already am. 😉

Congrats on the Marlin:thumbup: I have owned several over the years and never been disappointed with one. Are you going to scope it?

Not planning on scope at this time but down the road when my eyes are older I might.

Well the wait is over. Here it is.

I shot it this morning. Seems to shoot pretty straight. All in all i am pretty happy with it.

thanks for the pic. so, you said, "All in all i am pretty happy with it"....out of curiosity, what don't you like about it?

The front stock has just the tinyist amount of wiggle and it has a few spots of surface rust. I am going to try some steel wool on the rust spots and just try to ignore the stock issue. It's so slight it's likely not hurting anything.

don't use steel wool. Brownell's sells bronze wool. It is better for the finish. Some people use a "real" copper penny to burnish the spots. Humidity effects the wood. A small shim can fix the wiggle. Nice rifle , I hope you enjoy it, a true classic !

Good to know, thanks. 👍🏻 i have much to learn yet.
