For all the disquiet in racial/ethnic harmony in the world, there are marvelous things happening every day--perhaps everywhere--but certainly in the U.S.
This is an except from a friend who recently went back to teaching the Chicago Public Schools. The world changes, and sometimes I forget that there are quiet heroes working each day to make it better.
"School?
My 1st Grade class has 28 little people (huge by suburban standards)
I am not complaining about these kids though- no screamers or bolters and
I have the semi-crazyones scared of me.
Many lovely girls- Some ultra babyish boys, but some trying very hard to be big
boys. A couple kids-well 3, 5, 6 tops- Id like to trade away. This group does have a
sense of humor, which I require!
Of the 28, I believe only 3 have 2 native English speaking parents-many
never speak English outside of School and 1 is brand new to US. Many
others in U.S. only a few months to a year. Albanian, Bosnian, Romanian,
Spanish, Polish, Arabic, Czech-my own United Nations...and we in the
city are judged against teachers in tiny calm "all-American" towns like yours. But, I suspect there are differences. "
"When I taught Remedial Reading almost all of
the slowest 3rd Grade Readers who came to me, passed the crucial-to-pass
IOWA test. I didnt teach Remedial last year and just found out that 20
3rd graders failed the test last May and are repeating 3rd gr. now. "
"It IS nice to have my own class."
It is a new world each day in many senses.
