microtechs manual folders?

i have a bit of a question here. ive seen pics of alot of microtech manuals, and i myself own a microtch vector (manual), so my question is why are the're thumb studs so big? like, on the whale shark for instance:

i mean, its almost as big as the pivot. why though?
