Mini-Review on Mini-Lighter (PICS)

wjzgma I use the eye dropper for the big stainless pill cases (I got at CVS) that holds lighter fluid. The eye dropper is plastic and before I was wasting a lot of fluid refilling the small lighter so I use a small dropper. I have 2 lighters (1 backup) in the one kit with extra flint and 2 big stainless pill cases.

FLIX, I got them at CVS and also the small one to hold the extra flint.

A lot of it is over kill, for I've not had to change flint, even though I've now mod'ed a second one and it uses very little lighter fluid. I have enough for several months of hard use just in that kit. Or a year if using it in a survival mode keeping my fire going as much as possible.

If you put in a zippo wick (from walgreens of walmart), use hemostats to pull the cotton and old wick out, then put the new wick in and hold the bottom with the hemostats at the bottom so when you put the cotton back in the wick doesn't slide up. I cut the wick off at the bottom of the lighter to get the max wicking action. If you don't have the new wick go to the bottom of the lighter, it will seem like you are running out of fuel quickly because it is not wicking up the fluid on the bottom of the lighter. It's really not as hard as I'm making it out to be but it does give a nice flame.

Thanks for the heads up.

Jeepnut,

Sweet! Just bought 3 of them! Thanks guys!!

Man! I should be getting a commission from this guy! I ordered another 6 myself. This guy probably saw a huge spike in his sales!

gyro50000,

I'll have to look around for those pill bottles. It seems I can never have too many gimmicky little containers! :D Thanks for explaining wick and flint replacement.

What about wind resistance, this lighter seems to be missing any kind of wind guard like a bic or Zippo Have

I think these look like a better idea than a zippo for a PSK, simply because they seal better, I think I may pick one up.

FLIX, if you don't have a CVS near you try: http://www.medids.com/PILL_PAL.html

EmsRescueGuy, there not very wind resistance, all you have to do is cover your hands or turn your back against the wind, behind a tree or in a hole, etc.. but if you need it in a survival situation there great because if you have them on a keychain and fall out of a boat or in a creek and get to shore it's not effected against water in it's capsule and if you carry a pill fob full of fuel, then you'll have extra fuel if your stranded for long periods of time. It will handle a little wind though...

Cool but unfortunately the seller is one those "i will only sell in the continental U.S" types. Its all the same green baby it shouldn't matter what country/continent you're in/on!
:grumpy:

oh well i will purchase the similar type ones from rotokid who has a great rep and who actually sells to those of us outside the U.S.

tholiver,

You may want to contact the seller directly about shipping outside of the USA. As the owner of an ecommerce website, I have had to deal with unfortuate limitations in our online ordering system. Because our rental program is currently available only to customers within the USA, our sign-up page requires a stateside address in order to process the order. So far, we have been unable to get the system to differentiate between overseas customers that want to purchase DVDs from us and those that may want to participate in our rental program. What this means is that overseas customers cannot order online. The good news is that we are happy to take their order over the phone. Maybe the medids.com people will similarly be inclined to help if you call. BTW, I couldn't get the link you posted to work.

Gyro5000 thanks for the reply and pics,

I see by your arms that you are also a member of the pale freckled esily sunburned white boy club :D

EmsRescueGuy , your welcome and yes I am one of those step children that many people refer too. I'm glad there's another one here, I had an extra one of these lighters I was upgrading and I'll try to get some pictures of it disassembled tomorrow so everyone can see how easy this one is to repair in the field if needed.

Scroll down the page a little....

No I haven't bought from Chinahorde or tygerpypes, I trusted e-bay alittle more than these guys cause they dropped paypal. I have a good PDF file for this lighter that shows how to change out the wick and flint and tear it pretty much all the way down but it's 23 megs and I don't know a site that will let me store the file to post it. Any ideas?

Here's some more pics of upgrading it.

This next picture is a complete breakdown, I would not suggest going this far unless you were rebuilding the entire lighter! This picture shows you the entire breakdown for curiosity.

Use normal flint, sand down the sides slightly to fit.

A real tourdeforce of photos Gyro. Thank you kindly.

Any idea who manufactures these tiny lighters?

oregon

The disparity in prices makes me wonder if there is a difference in quality between these visually identical looking lighters. The only difference I can see is a split ring versus the key chain loop thing.

Can you just leave it running and see how long it will take for the fuel to run out? That is my main concern with this.

Groovy,

I found that you can keep one lit for about one and a half minutes before it starts to get too hot to comfortably hold. You just can't light it and leave it because of the round bottom. It also might do permenant damage to the lighter.
