Most Popular Knife Brand

Just curious. What do folks think are the most popular knife brands in the world?

Some notes before we begin:

--I’m not asking what is the best knife. I am also not asking what is your favorite knife. I am, finally, not asking what is the best value in a knife.

I am asking, instead, what company sells the most knives.

--we are looking at brands, not specific models. Also, no clones. I’m curious as to who you think is selling the most.

--while I’ll list some from other places, I’m going to lean towards US brands. We are the largest market, so if a brand sells big here, those number are huge. A common knife in France, e.g., would still sell a lot less than a popular brand in the States.

--there are no accurate numbers public, as far as I’m aware. But to put it mildly, this is a more informed group when it comes to knife matters.

Anyway, my big winner:

Victorinox. A huge seller in the US. Every sporting goods chain store, every large chain (e.g. Target, Kmart) in this country sells them. Plus all over the world. I have seen them in airports in a number of countries throughout Europe. The closest thing there is to a universal knife.

Next, Buck. Again, every sporting goods shop, big or small carries these. There have to be a lot of sales there. You can buy a real Buck knife in plenty of gas stations.

Gerber. Not a favorite on these boards, but a big seller. I just saw a ton of them in a major hardware store chain. Their marketing is superb; they are everywhere.

A couple of thoughts:

--does China have a popular, mass produced knife brand? If so, that might top the list.

--some of the South American machetes are sold throughout the continent. I don’t know this type of knife, so anyone have input here? How would they stack up in terms of number of units sold compared to the big US knife brands?

--what about Mora? I know their home market is small, but they are sold in a lot of countries. Also, Opinel?

Your thoughts?

Buck, Victorinox, Schrade, Gerber, Case, KAI, Opinel. In my opinion, these are some of the most popular folding brands throughout the world.

I would think Ontario and Ka-Bar would have very high sales, as well as Buck, Case, Victorinox. Old Hickory has been around for over 100 years! What about Imacasa, Cold Steel, Schrade, and so many others. If we're talking # of knives sold, world-wide, then you gotta remember US Military would have to be considered.
It's a great question, and I don't know the history or productions numbers to give an answer. Anybody have some insight?

Wikipedia shows Victorinox's total production of knives, and multi-tools as over 100,000 per day.

Not sure if any other company even comes close to that.

Maybe Servotronics?
I believe they're the parent company for Ontario, Queen, Old Hickory, Schatt & Morgan, Robeson, etc, etc; and make the knives for many other brands like Cutco and Kabar.

Buck.

I have friends that wouldn't know good steel if it bit them in the behind. However, they still refer to any large hunting knife (regardless of manufacturer) as a "Buck knife". So Buck it is.

its got to be buck in the usa anyway. not so many Victorinox seem to be out there. kershaw, case and gerber do well but i doubt if you can find someone that hasnt heard of buck.

OMG!!! how is it you forgot :
Mantis
Sanrenmu
Dark Ops...

Actually I agree with the OP in Buck, Victorinox, and I also agree Case should be there as well....:D

My guess would be Victorinox, hands down. Swiss army knives, in particular, are absolutely ubiquitous in many, many countries. I doubt very much that any other company comes close to being that widespread. Case and Buck are probably really popular in the states, but I kind of doubt that they're equally popular throughout, say, Europe, or the rest of North America.

Personally, the first two knife companies I had ever heard of were Victorinox and Buck.

i dont know about worldwide but i think in the U.S. i would say Buck, Case, Gerber, Kershaw, and Schrade are all very known and high selling brands you can find anywhere from Walmart to Tractor Supply Co and everywhere inbetween. but cannot forget United Cutlery and Frost... they flood their cheap crap thru fleamarkets everywhere... Schrade does to... or Taylor LLC or whatever with their Smith & Wesson knives.. i think 3 out of 5 young knife liking teenagers have owned a Smith & Wesson knife of some sort

Tramontina would probably have high production numbers. Besides making alot of the machetes mentioned in the first post, they also supply a ton of kitchen knives to the food processing industry. Just a guess if we are only discussing numbers of knives produced, regardless of models/types.

If I remember correctly Victorinox and Dexter Russell are the two largest knife companies in the world.

Buck Knives is on the cutting edge this year. A million times, already.

The Post Falls factory produced knife No. 1 million of 2010 on Friday - and there are still two months left in the year.

"We're breaking records," said Phil Duckett, Buck Knives chief operating officer. "It's awesome."
There is the Buck data :)

I could not find the 2009 Annual Report for Zippo
That would have Case sales info....

probably we should look into kitchen knife brand, they may outsale all the brands that have been mentioned here...

I'd guess the best open data set is amazon.com's knife sections sorted by "bestselling"--at least for bestselling in the U.S.

Just for fun, the top three from each are:

Sports & Outdoors › Hunting & Fishing › Hunting › Hunting Knives ›
1. Smith & Wesson CK5TBS Bullseye Extreme Ops 4.1" 40% Serrated Black Tanto Blade
2. Set 3 Ninja Stealth Black Throwing Knives with nylon case
3. Spyderco Tenacious G-10 Handle Folding Plain Edge Knife

Tools & Home Improvement › Power & Hand Tools › Hand Tools › Knives › Folded Knives ›
1. Smith & Wesson SWMP5LS M&P Linerlock Knife with 2nd Generation MAGIC Assisted Open and 40% Serrated Drop Point Blade
2. Gerber 06079 Folding Clip Point Serrated Gator Knife, Box
3. Gerber 30-000176 Epic Knife, Serrated Edge

Sports & Outdoors › Outdoor Recreation › Camping & Hiking › Knives & Tools › Folding Knives ›
1. Victorinox Swiss Army Ranger with Classic Pocket Knife
2. Victorinox Swiss Army Tinker and Classic Knife Combo
3. Victorinox Swiss Army Champion Plus Pocket Knife

It seems like S&W, Gerber, and Victorinox are in the running. If I had to guess, I'd say Victorinox because they dominate the whole first page of "bestselling" in that last section.

S&W and Gerber (and the Spyderco Tenacious) are China-produced.
