My new car camping flashlight (630 lumens)

I think I want one. Wait, no I think I need one. Wait, no I know I need one.

Alright, added it to my to get list, thanks a lot :D

Thanks a lot BushcraftBrainTrust
now i see what you mean by saying car camping flashlight. hahahaha.
it's a monster!!
I want one too.

I am working on my first order from Fenix. You guys think I should order some of these? I was going to pass because of the price, but just from the interest in this thread, maybe they are a good idea.

I don't know how well they would sell just due to the sheer size of them although they certainly pack a punch. Most people complain about adding any extra weight when backpacking or hiking so ......

For backpacking, I don't think you can beat the LD10 with the light diffuser. The diffuser doesn't get much attention, but it turns the light into a lantern. It is extremely light and uses the same batteries as my GPS and 2 way radios.

For shorter trips and car camping, I will definitely be taking the TK40 also. Its long life on lower settings (4.5 hours at 277 lumens / 130 hours at 13 lumens), being waterproof, and the ability to kick it up to 630 lumens would all be nice luxuries.

Bushcraft,

Can you post a pic of the TK40 in the shoulder strap and show what that looks like,

Thanks
RickJ

I have had my eyes on one of these for awhile but I couldn't bring myself to pull the trigger on it just yet. How do you like it? What's the battery carrier like? (pics?)

TK40, do want, trying to hold out for a new SF M3TL or M3L head. I may end up with a tk40

If you decide to order them, let us know. I will wait and order one from you. They are a bit pricey so I don't know if it is worth your while to stock them in this economy. Anyone else have an opinion?

I just got this in the mail. I won't have a chance to use it in the woods until next week (will post pics when I do). Maximum 630 lumens with 130 hours at 13 lumens. It runs on 8 AA batteries (I'm using rechargeables).

Turbo - 630 Lumens, 1 Hour
Low - 13 Lumens, 130 Hours
Medium - 93 Lumens, 11 Hours
High - 277 Lumens, 4.5 Hours

Congrats:thumbup: & thanks for the link!I've been looking for something like this for work & Surefires are a little too pricey for what you get IMO.
pre-ordering right now.Thanks again!:D

I came really close to pre-ordering one of those myself. The only thing that turned me off (yuk yuk yuk) was that, according to what I read, the light comes on first at "Turbo" mode, then can be cycled to the other power settings. Is this the case?

Those darn modern flashlights are as addicting as knives!

Yes, BUT it also has "intelligent circuitry" that remembers your last output setting. When you turn on the light, it automatically starts at your last output setting. I just tried it, and it works perfectly.

please post a beam shot when you can.

I wanted the first beam shots of the light to be outdoor/wildlife pictures. Luckily, when I came downstairs this morning, I discovered a giant yellow slickered duck in my living room (2' tall). These shots were taken inside my house at 20'. The first is with my P2D at the 107 lumen setting, and the second is with the TK40 at 630 lumens. Inside shots, by a poor photographer, do not do this light justice. It has a very tight, clean spot with a huge right spill. I'm taking it outdoors next weekend, and I will post a full review (with pictures).

This is awesome, thanks for posting. You can get semi-custom and custom lights like this (look on cpf) but to see a production light like this at a relatively low price.... Nice. *Very* nice. :)

Oh and if anyone is curious it's relatively easy to modify a 2D Maglite into an incandescent like with roughly similar output. Linky

The battery carrier is well designed. Mine is loaded with rechargeable batteries. I found them on sale at Walgreens for $7.99 and picked up 4 packs of 4 batteries.

Great. Now I suppose I'll have to get one. Maybe when my tax return hits the bank....

I did just order a NiteCore Tactical SmartPD D20 (180-lumen, fully adjustable output, 2xAA). I have the PD10 (single AA) and it's my all-time favorite flashlight. (although my new Fenix LOD-CE is pretty impressive!)

BTW... not only are rechargeable batteries a good ecological choice, they generally give longer run times than alkalines.
