Nathan 'The Machinist' Carothers

I finished building the model for our EDC a few weeks before Blade, and sent it to Nate to check out in advance.
We had some time to discuss the deets at the show, and he just now sent me his digital rendering which is looking AWESOME!
Stay tuned...

Whoa!!! This is great news! Any collaboration you do with Nathan is on my radar, but specifically an EDC type from you guys is right at the top of my list.
Can't wait to see the rendering, & how it develops & progresses.
I am focused!!!

we approached the EDC with your average construction worker in mind. Something comfortable for the hand, that provides maximum leverage in a cut, and small enough to possibly displace your folder with pocket clip.
The biggest challenge is going to be developing the sheath, but we plan on bringing in a pretty renowned kydex dude to ensure that this thing is going to be practical.

I'm your average journeyman Glazier :)

Would love to know how.you got into knife design Lorien as I have a sketch book full lol

I wouldn't presume to give advice on how to get into designing, I haven't earned that entitlement yet, and have no formal accreditation at all.

The way I started was with youthful enthusiasm and some stationary 30+ years ago, a couple stints at universities studying art and art history, dropping out and working in a relatively technical business where I have to deal with people regularly, and spending 10+ years getting to know people in the cutlery industry here on Bladeforums. To be honest, I don't consider myself particularly talented when it comes to design. Although I have an open mind, have some rudimentary drawing skills, and like to learn things, it really comes down to who I know, not what I know!

I like to hang on to old sketches, they serve to provide humility in those times when my head gets too big. This would be about 30 years old;

Lol!

Lorien, don't you dare give up on that skull habaki!

I have one of those small D2 hunters.
I find it a very well designed knife. It feels good in hand and just makes you want to go and cut stuff. The dropped edge makes it very secure

"The Machinist" always makes me think of Charles Bronson, because I saw "The Mechanic" when I was probably too young, and it made such an impression, as Bronson and Nathan are wont to do.

Spent some time with the Heavy Chopper yesterday. I was very impressed!

Glad it's in MUCH more capable hands than mine.....I had a blast though. :)
