Boring title, but a very fun overnighter. A big thank you to trailbum who (as well as hosting the Northeast Gathering every year) did the legwork to secure this cabin for Sunday night. Radeke Cabin is owned by the Park Service, and is a rustic (read: no water/plumbing, no electricity) cabin that sleeps ten, and has a wood stove inside and a firepit and pit toilet outside. Trailbum picked an awesome weekend and was lucky to get it, as we were told it's pretty much rented year-round. Dresnor (Jeremy), Copperhead88 (Amanda) and Becker (dog) were the first to arrive, followed shortly by me. Trailbum showed up not long after that with his charcoal grill, and we drove back to Conway to harvest the evening repast from the local Shur-Fine.

Becker was so happy to be there he jumped for joy....right into Amanda's arms:

First up, cheeseburgers! Trailbum style:

Bacon was cooked, onions were sliced with the 15 and cooked in the liquid bacon, then the burgers got a quick set in bacon ambrosia before grilling. The results:

Gratuitous ( if there is such thing with regard to) bacon shot:

Washed the burgers down with some hot dogs, then off to the firepit to play with knives! First up was my new (to me, and also never used, so....new) Brute. Decided that I just can't own a safe queen. Here's Jeremy testing it out:

Becker was tired after a long day of doing, you know.....dog stuff. He is a funny (and fun) pup. That's the "tradewater bushcrafter 10" in Jeremy's lap, IIRC. Very nice mod, trade. Hell of a story, too.

Perfect night for a fire: crystal clear sky, temps dropped into the mid 40's

Lots more BS-ing and knife passarounds, then off to bed. Warmed up pretty quickly this morning - it's surprising to still see snow on the ground:

Breakfast was made while we all had some blueberry muffins Amanda had made. More bacon and eggs cooked in, what else, bacon oil.

Wait....oh yeah....Beckers & Bacon:

After breakfast, Jeremy showed us a cool deadfall trap, and I think I may have even retained some of the method of how you make one ;):

And there was some chopping with Patrol Machetes and the Brute, as well as Jeremy's new Baryonyx Machete. That knife did some serious damage:

Trailbum let me take the "new" off his Patrol Machete. I was quite honored. Then he showed me how it's done:

Stay tuned for part 2, when we walk to the river and Becker (and Amanda) go for a swim! Gonna hit the rack, I'm hoping trailbum will add some pics, and Jeremy and Amanda, too. Hope this inspires you to get out. Super fun.

Awesome stuff man, thanks for posting. You liking the Brute?

Dresnor's blade looks like a Baryonyx machete.

That dog is funny as hell, looks like you had a blast. I can't wait to go back pack camping this year.
Tomorrow it's legal for open fires here in New York state so I'll be camping soon enough! Maybe an overnighter this weekend.

My, my......I do wish I had been there!!!!!..... What else to say but, thanks for sharing a very good time.....

Ethan

You guys do know how to have a good time. We can't wait to get up that way this fall.

Looks like a hell of a good time! bacon, knives, fire, friends.. what else could you ask for?

I do want part two... very badly. Nice pics and story GSOM, keep it coming ;). Would be nice to find some likeminded people in close proximity to me too... Could only imagine the fun.

What a great time.
The weather was great.
Really nice to get away and just hang out.
What Idiot would plans this on Mothers day.
Maybe a future Beckerhead Gathering site.

The Radeke cabin.
A lot of room to hang out in if the weather was bad.

The porch.
Jeremy and I were trying to find a good spot to hang a Hammock.

The main room of the cabin.

There are three sleeping rooms in the cabin, bunk bed style, I felt like a kid at camp.

The firepit behind the cabin.
Food Fire and Friends.

A short walk through the woods brought us to a really nice river.
The trail dies but its not hard to find.

Becker living it up.

A really great gift from Amanda and Jeremy (made by Amandas Grandfather).
Thanks again.
It’s made out of red oak.

Mike brought a bag of folders to play with. (sorry no pics )

We all brought a large chopper.

BK1
BK6
Baryonyx machete
Mora

Trying them out.

Pics of the area.

Thank you for the great time and the gifts, oh yeah the rabbit jerky is great.
Thanks again to this Forum and the great people here.

This was the Brute's maiden voyage. It's a splitting wedge of a knife....or the wood was very dry. Chops OK, too. I'm gonna hafta do something about the grip though, as it is too big for my medium sized hands.
And that is a Baryonyx machete. Super chopper, for such a slim blade it makes some big chips.

Did you say bacon oil.....
Yes. Because it sounds more backwoods gourmet than "grease" ;).

You guys do know how to have a good time. We can't wait to get up that way this fall.
I am looking forward to meeting you both. Heard you might be coming up this fall. Too bad it's not earlier, I'd take you out sea kayaking on the Maine Island Trail (http://www.mita.org/) down in my area of NH/ME.
I've already mentioned it, but that bushcrafter Jeremy had is just gorgeous, trade.

I was kinda tired last night....hoping trailbum and dresnor will add to this as well.

After breakfast Monday, and some knife play and trap demos, we walked back through the woods to the Swift river that the Kancamagus Highway runs along. In the summer this river has a lot of roadside swimming holes, some with rock waterslides and little waterfalls to sit under. Radeke cabin sits along a more tame part of the river. Getting close, we found these:

And then there was a little spider freak-out:

14199857593_61710ae93f_b.jpg

But we finally made it to the river safely, where Becker promptly jumped in:

Probably a great day for swimming if you are coated with fur and have a limited capacity for experiencing discomfort - the water was COLD, as Amanda was soon to find out.

Becker was having a great time but got into a little "deep water" and next thing Amanda was going in to rescue him. The water is still really snowmelt and is C-O-L-D. Kind of a steep drop-off at the end of the sandbar.

The rest of the crew:

Just a gorgeous day:

This is where all that water in the river comes from:

We headed back to camp so Amanda could get some dry clothes (people succumbing to hypothermia can really ruin a good camping trip) and stoke up the fire a little for her. The rest of us parked it in the shade as it was very warm and sunny for a bunch of pale NH folk. Gave us a chance to try out trailbum's new toy, which Amanda's grandfather made. A very nice collapsible bucksaw, light and compact, made of red oak and a custom aluminum tension rod. Might copy the design.

I gave out some more lanyards (and beer), Jeremy and Amanda brought some (Korean BBQ) rabbit jerky for everyone, and trailbum some kickin' kydex for us (how did he know I just got a 14?). Just a great overnighter. Looking forward to getting out again at least a few more times before the gathering in October. Many thanks again to trailbum for organizing this and getting the cabin reserved.

Thanks for posting more photos. Looks like a helluva nice area. Sweet bucksaw.

Amanda and I made it home safely. We had such a great time. that cabin was awesome.

I am very tired and I acquired the beginnings of another migraine headache. I will post my pictures soon.

Jeremy

Hey no fair having fun without me! :)

Looks like an awesome trip guys, Becker is getting so big!

We're sorry. We really are. Wish you coulda been there.....maybe we'll get it for a whole weekend next time to make the drive worthwhile for you. Your name did come up in conversation, especially with regards to my favorite Becker, the 12 - which I would never have had a chance to handle were it not for yours! Looking forward to seeing you in the fall and checking out some of your leatherwork.
