I've really been toying with the idea of a HDMC. I already have a BC. Is the extra thickness really that much more noticeable? How different are the two? I totally dig the BC but honestly don't use it that often, just no need. I do keep it with me when watching Gladiator though ;-) Overall I really like the BC.

Asking because Nathan has one (or more) that are going to be on this Friday's sale, assuming I can get in.

It's a lot of dollars to spend if they are really that similar.

As always my worthless 2Cs:

If you are into collecting CPKs for whatever reason (no one judges in here) to not own an HDMC specially when they become available will leave you regretting it.

However, if you plan on using the one Carothers chopper which can do almost anything you want, that chopper is the MC. The BC is the 12” version of this idea. Full disclosure, I have had them all and still own the indestructible HDMC and the indomitable Behemother with the best handle scales ever offered by Nathan in terms of grip, Grip, GRIP.

If I were forced to keep one and only one, that one will be the MC.

I kinda collect them but I really enjoy using them. The only "safe queen I have" is a HDFK and that's only in case I lose the one I use. Something similar with a UFK as well I suppose.

Casino, if you don't mind me asking how close to San Diego do you live?

North county San Diego in San Elijo Hills area of San Marcos :)

On the HDMC conundrum, if you don’t have to suffer spending the $, then go for it as the HDMC is an indestructible beast. Nathan designed it for his knucklehead fans. I believe that I even started HDMC’s original thread in here. There was a time at the beginning when a few of them came up for sale in the secondary market so they were not the fastest movers but I expect all that to be well behind us by now. Nathan will probably not make another CPK chopper pattern for at least another year!

Same, although I'll take it a step further......if I were forced to keep one and only one in the 10" range of any maker I currently own, that one will be the MC. The Medium Chopper is brilliant, although it needs a better moniker. I'd never discourage a guy from going after the HD version tho, gunslinger!

Way back in time, when the only production CPK chopper was the LC, another BF meme r and I had a discussion about the LC (he’s not one of our regulars or anyone who visits here at all for that matter but did purportedly own an LC at some point). Anywho... we got into a discussion when he had said that for the price that the LC was being sold for (high 3s back then) it really didn’t perform well against his BK20 (or whatever that 10” BK is named which is now also hard to find). My counter point was that the gentleman had totally missed the whole point of the LC. Let’s just say that we never agreed on anything.

To come back to your point Dave, the MC is really all that because it is actually made to run circles around those lesser priced high carbon steel 10” knives in addition to its own peers. I think that with HDMC, Nathan raised the stakes for an indestructible CPK to go against any Busse Kin.

I have a few CPK Choppers including a MC and a HDMC ... both would do anything I would ever ask of them. The HDMC is a beast of a knife ... as close to bomb proof as possible. If someone truly wants a big knife as mainly a chopper ... the HDMC does have a bit of an advantage as it really bites in and pops wood out of a cut in chunks ... it is a noticeable difference if strictly comparing as choppers. If you want a monster blade that makes you smile using it ... you would probably enjoy the HDMC.

If you don't get in on the sale Friday for a HDMC ... in my sig line below I still have my spare one listed for sale or a possible trade.

I have to agree with Nathan ... if you want the better all around of the Medium Choppers ... the regular MC is a better cutter and enough lighter to be noticeable. The HDMC excels at chopping ... but as I said you would never feel like you didn't have enough knife with the regular MC.

I would only recommend the HDMC if you're looking for a dedicated chopper. Or if you just want a bombproof (maybe idiot proof ?) big blade. But they are fun!
