Greetings all, I have a continuing education opportunity coming up in March in Baltimore. I've never been there before, nor know anybody who has.
So, what's there to do there? What's worthwhile seeing? Any good restaurants (that won't break the bank)? Will it be nice (enough) in mid March weatherwise? Knife friendly? Any good knife stores in the Baltimore Convention Center area?
Gimme a reason to visit Baltimore besides the excellent continuing ed. stuff.
Thanks, Mongo

See if you can get this course in St. Louis. At least, we have a Hustler club.

Yes there is a Hustlers club on Baltimores block. Never been there so I can't comment. The Inner Harbor has plenty of restaurants and shops. You can try Marylands world famous crabcakes if you dine there. There is also the National Aquarium. Chesapeake Knife and Tool is located in the shop area of the Inner Harbor but their prices are a bit high. Camden yards is not far from the Inner Harbor but March is a little early for Orioles baseball. Fells Point is the nite club area. Hammerjack's is supposed to be a good club also. Fort McHenry and other historical places to visit. There are also theatres, arts and entertainment aplenty throughout the city. The weather can be 80 degrees one day then snowing the next. Typical Maryland weather :grumpy: All in all there is plenty to do so I don't think you'll be wondering how to stay busy. Icon of Sin I believe lives in Baltimore, so he may be more specific about locals. Enjoy and stay safe.

Was in "Balmer" a year or so ago for a trade show. Cool town. Fell's Point is a fun place for a meal/beverage, the "Block" isn't. Unless you're heavily into sleaze.

Camden Yards
Babe Ruth Museum
Lots of good clubs (Cancun Cantina, nightclubs etc)
Hooters
98 Rock (97.9FM) best station out there! Kirk, Mark, and Lopez in the morning (with larry the cable guy, and porn stars), Mickey and Amelia in the afternoon,
Stash in the evening. Mandatory Metallica at 9:00.

Hammerjacks is awesome! Inner Harbor is real nice, there is a towing convention there every year!

I was mostly kidding about the talking, mostly.

I say scope it out! :D

We went to the Baltimore area for a Rennfair a few weeks ago, and it's a great place...

Except for driving and eating. There's no food in the BWI Airport area, at least, and even if there was, you'd never find it. The airport's the size of some small countries, and it's surrounded by a sprawling suburb of 30+ hotels. And there's no food. Okay, no, there're like four restaurants. A Bob Evans, that closes at about nine o'clock, a McDonalds, that closes at about nine o'clock, a Wendy's, and a Ruby Tuesday's, which was still under construction. We drove around for two and a half hours trying to find decent food. Not even a supermarket. We eventually saw some guys on a bridge pulling up crab traps. I think it's the only way to get food around there ;)

Similarly, the roads can easily drive weak men to raving insanity. Never in my life have I seen so many like-named roads in such a small space. 95, 195, 295, 395, 595, 695, 895... And you can easily need to use three of them to get someplace. And They don't use exit numbers. And the county roads each have at least two or three local names. "rt23" might go from "Old Mill Way" to "Valley Blvd" to "Colonel Buford C. Hernandez IV Expressway" by the time you get off of it. Now, I'm from Jersey. I understand population density and frustrating driving conditions. But we know how to design roads for it! Never in Jersey have I been able to come to the intersection of Daisy Lane and Daisy Lane. :D

Bitching aside, though, what we saw of Baltimore was beautiful. And I'm sure you'll learn how to navigate the roads, and evolve past the need for food ;)

heh. I was just gonna type this same exact thing myself. I went to visit my girl friend up there (this is before she moved to south florida with me) a few years back and naturally I had to check out the local knife store. They are overpriced a bit but the owner was nice enough to ship a few blades to my house in Fla free of charge so that I didn't have to check my one bag at the airport. So all in all, I'd say they are worth a look. Other than that I just walked around the Inner Harbor area for awhile, there are many good stores and restaurants there.

However, I did get lost... within a few blocks of the Inner Harbor is the, ummm, inner city (or so it seemed to me). so it pays to pay attention. other than that I really got a kick out of historic Ellicott City. No knife shops that I know of but there are all kinds of interesting little stores and restaurants there. If you have the time, I would suggest checking it out.

bf.c member Chefget is the Chef at a very tonie restaurant there.

And member Louie is a chef at another rather upscale eaterie there.
