Newbie looking for advise

I'm trying to understand the difference (pros and cons) of different types of steels for a sword I would like to have made at some point in the future.

I have been looking at either S5 or L6 as potential candidates.

I'm aware that the forging, tempering and skill of the blacksmith, has more to say than steel, but I'm looking to have a nice good baseline for it, when the day comes.

I'm interested in your thoughts on the matter... Why to chose the one over the other.
