I taking a family vacation next week to Niagara Falls for two day and then camping at Inverhuron Provincial Park for the rest of the week. I’m going to take a two fix blades but leave the folders at home. The only folder I own that may make it through is my Buck 110.

So the thought came to me to buy a folder after I cross the border. This will take care two of my problems. I will be able to have a folder on me when camping, and I can buy a souvenir.

Any recommendations on a place to buy one? Like a sporting goods store? I’m not looking for anything custom but something along the lines of a Spyderco would work.

Actually, something made in Canada would be cool. What are good Canadian made folders?

Grohmann makes a good lockback but it's not cheap in the $80 range and I couldn't even begin to tell you where you'd get one other than their website.
Personally I would just go to a Walmart and get a Victorinox recruit, remember all the new knife laws they've got and how difficult it might he to find something modern.
If someone was able to easily flick the blade open it may not be available for sale unless previously imported I'd think.

Are visitors getting a shake down crossing the Canadian border, or is it just a postal issue?

I’ve been known to make an occasional border crossing while backpacking in Glacier/Waterton, and I don’t want to loose a knife at customs..

There have been a few stories here of this.

I’ve heard that people crossing over are having issues so I’m going to play it safe.

I also just noticed there is a Bass Pro in Niagara. I’m guessing they would have a decent selection.

You are correct. Bass pro will be your best bet. Not sure of any blade stores in the falls. Bass pro is only a few minutes down the highway. They carry some cheap knives like oldtimer, gerber, etc. And some decent ones like buck, spyderco, Benchmade etc... There is a Isle just for cutlery, however most of the good stuff is in the glass display cases along the back wall.

I've been asked when crossing both borders if I'm carrying a weapon. Also if I have sausages, fruit, and gifts for friends.

It's a script both sides use. For US folks coming to Canada they're really a lot more interested in what firearms you have. If you don't have any firearms don't have any ammunition lying around. There are some hunting rifles and shotguns that are fine to declare and import if that's part of the trip.

If asked if you were carrying any weapons, would you disclose your knife? I don't think of knives as weapons any more than a hammer, but I don't know what the proper answer or way to handle it would be in this situation. Either way has the potential of being a problem.

Always err on the side of caution I say. My standard answer to that question is. "No weapons, but I do have a pocket knife".

SR Knives has a great selection of modern folders and fixed blades. The problem is that you would have to go near Toronto, and getting in and out of that area of the city from Niagara Falls will add at least two or three hours to your trip.
If that is not an option, then Canadian Tire will have some Buck, Gerber, Leatherman, Victorinox products for you.
Canadian made production folders??? There aren’t any. Grohmann Knives as mentioned before, are well known in Canada. However, I would not label them a production knife, almost a semi-custom because they are found in small batches.

Bass Pro would definitely work too.

The issue with the CBSA revolves around a new interpretation of the same knife law that has been enforced here for at least a decade. The law has not changed, only the CBSA’s interpretation has. They now seek to confiscate all one-hand-openable knives entering Canada. They blocked my Curtiss F3 calling it an Automatic, because it had a flipper tab!!!
Best advice, if you are coming into Canada with a folder, is to tighten the pivot to the point where the knife is impossible to open with one hand.

Depending on which days you are planning your trip, I would be willing to donate my modded Delica to you if you swing by Bolton on your way up to Inverhuron. It is a user, has been sharpened, and I modded it so that it has a wav. It gets zero pocket time these days, but has lots of useful life left. Bolton is not REALLY on your way though. It’s about 15/20 minutes away from the Mayfield Rd. exit on HWY 427.
It’s an option for you anyways....:thumbsup:

That's what I say too. Of course I make sure it's a common person's image of a pocket knife in my pocket. US border guards are fabulously unimpressed with the idea of tooled up Canadians planning possible mischief, shenanigans, or hi jinx.

That seems reasonable and is along the lines of my thinking
I am trying to put together a plan for some extensive Rving where I would be crossing the border from time to time. Since the RV will be my home my possessions including my knives will traveling with me. May have to put some thought into this to avoid problems.

Yeah, if you have a lot of personal belongings, they may suspect you're planning to stay in the country indefinitely.

^^^ it won't be that much, but I will have some one handed knives for sure on this side of the border, since that is what I carry. I may have to find somewhere to secure them on this side and pick them back up on return. Nothing I would want to loose.

Yes, better safe than sorry! It's pretty messed up right now. You can buy a OHO knife while you're in Canada, just can't bring one over the border.

Thanks for the help guys and the offer CRKDMike but it should be simple enough to go to Bass pro and pick one up. Plus, I always buy some kind of souvenir when I travel and I can’t think of anything better then a new knife.

I thought of taking a knife and tighten the pivot down and I may still try it. I think I will still get a new knife anyway.

Arrrrgh!!!
There are no new "knife laws."
There are simply the idiots at the Border.

In Canada, "modern" knives are really, really easy to find and buy.
Canadian Tire, Walmart, wherever.

I wouldn't even really worry about crossing the Border with my own knife.
They did not ask to see my knife or try to flick it when I was coming back into Canada from the States.

Ok, I thought they had passed a ban on the importation of one handed folders.
My bad.
