Non-American Bowie-type knives

Thanks! I really like the file (or Dremel) work on the "Bones" one. Do you think the guad and bolster are aluminum?
- aluminium....?? Good heavens, no. Never heard of anyone using that for a knife guard - too soft.!

304 stainless :)

Nice! I do think Buck and other companies use aluminum for fittings, though ...
- ok, stand corrected. I’d’ve thought too soft but perhaps there’s an aeronautical grade like for Ti….?

No idea! I agree in any case: I wouldn't want to use aluminum for a knife myself. That said, I think even some Sheffield makers, for example, switched to aluminum in the 1900s.

I've seen it used on old Sheffield Whittle-tang Bowies, more generally referred to as Scout knives at the time, here 👍

And I believe old German, Japanese, and Spanish knives in that style (if I'm getting the type of knife you're referring to correctly) also typically came with aluminum pommels, though brass was the material of choice for guards. I guess Buck and others use aluminum for guards because they make them hefty enough to not bend easily.

I don't, but you could also post a link of the completed listing if there's pictures in it. I'd be happy to share my two cents, though I'm no expert.

Yes, I can.

Based on the pictures, I'd say it's legit. It's what some collectors would call a "Bowie-style hunter." The handle appears to be stag antler, though it could also be jigged bone; it's hard to say since it's pretty worn. The "Eng." on the blade after "Sheffield", standing for "England," places the knife after 1890, which is when US law started to require imports to be marked with the country of origin. However, based on the style of sheath, which I'd guess has what's referred to as a "butt stitch" on the side not shown in the picture, I'd say it's a pre-WW2, perhaps even pre-WW1, knife. Someone else might be able to tell you more about its age based on the blade stamps.

Hope it helps!

Thank you and yes it does have the butt stitch and yea I was thinking 1840 ish to 1901 so yes you made my window a bit smaller thank you very much ps I'm thinking civil war cause that's what I was seeing while doing my research
