"Mark - is that you Primble display?
Thank you for showing it."

Yes it's mine. I can't believe you didn't beat me to it! I bought it this spring at the Central Kentucky Knife Club's show in Lexington. Where were you?

There are a lot of great ideas in this thread about fixing up your display, the "L" shaped channel and the clear rods are good, but Charlie's galvanized sheet with the magnets is probably the best because of the flexibility of design IMHO.

Oh boy Mark, Primble is not going to be happy he missed that CKKC Show and the display case. :(

Fantastic growing collection Primble, I could look at your photos all day

Thank you Jack. I always enjoy your posts sir.:)

I would have liked it - for sure! I missed the show because I was all caught up in my discovery of BF and taking pictures of my knives. The thought of taking pictures of all of my knives had not occurred to me until I started lurking here! I do remember some of you showing your stash and thinking - how could I have missed that !!??:eek::D

You are right Mark - I was not happy I missed it. :o:)

I suppose I should have said in the beginning that I want to keep the old antique looking Primble display looking like an antique - so while Marks idea for the clear plastic and rods and such would be fantastic for a new display, even for old knives, I do prefer to try to use materials inside the cabinet that will keep it looking old. Most everything in my house is either antiques or arts and crafts, OR KNIVES, :D etc., so I need the cabinet to "fit in with the other things in my home". I probably will not do very much to the exterior finish, since it has some nice old patina.

I believe this antique display to be the VERY SAME ONE that used to hold the John Primbles at the Caney Fork country store, where I would walk for miles, as a nine year old and face all of those "Blue Racer" snakes that used to sun at the edges of the dirt road. They would suddenly dart out at me and I probably spent more time running from them than walking! That Primble display is what caused/started my life long love of pocket knives and the memories of my adventures make this cabinet a very very special one. Always sneaking off and going to see the Primble knives, at that little country store, is what eventually earned me my nick-name.

I agree with you Mark that Charlie's idea of the covered galvanized steel with magnets seems the very most appealing to me right now. I don't mean to say that I dislike the wired in designs, but, I wanted to avoid using the wire, if possible, and that thought has delayed me doing anything to the old cabinet.

I also want to be able to get one or two of the old knives out of the case, every now and then - just to carry in my pocket for the day. :)

The message I hope to get across here is I need new ideas while, at the same time, want to keep the cabinet looking old.

I appreciate all the ideas and anyone that has one, I thank you for giving it to me.:)

OK - here is/was one of my ideas - this cell phone pic of a few Case displays I made out of poplar and painted to match the knife display below it:

They are about 1.75 inches deep. The cheaper cell phone lens makes them look like they are hanging crooked ,but, they are not really that way.

I could take the old Primble display and cut the back side of it down to make it a wall display, then stain the cuts to match the exterior.

So picture those two top displays side by side plus another inside the Primble cabinet - like one continuous dark red shadow box inside the display cabinet.

What do you think - no - yes - maybe??

Maybe I will try to photoshop my idea and you could get a better picture.

Another thing I like about this idea is that I have wall space to the right of the Case displays - around that corner.

I think it would allow for the shelving of 24 to 30 knives. I could put a lot of my old knives in the Primble display.

Clear as mud?? :D

Is that an early southern Cherry chest of drawers? Wonderful piece of Cherry. My Wife and I were in the antiques
business for many years, mainly country furniture and accessories. I have noticed the pieces other than your wonderful
knives.

Ok - and roughly done - my idea in photoshop plus I would try to retain the sliding glass in front:

Still thinking about that Mark - any ideas would be appreciated. It is hard to tell in the photo, but, that display board (I believe that the display board and glass are not original) slides in at an angle and from the top.

I have thought about re-designing the interior and making solid wood shelfs - however - I then re-think it and believe I would rather keep it closer to original.

Clear as MUD. :o

Just a thought - if you made the shadow box so that it just fit inside, you wouldn't lose anything. You could remove it if you needed/wanted to and still use it elsewhere, therefore not damaging the original case. Of course, maybe that was your idea all along - clear as mud! :)

Yes Robin - I favor Early American and cherry - here is the opposite corner of that room. I raised my son in this room and after he grew up and left home, I gave him his bedroom furniture. After he moved out, I stripped the wood floors and finished them by hand, then put some of my favorite pieces in there.

I keep special stuff in those seed boxes! ;):D

Good thinking my friend!! :thumbup::D

Great corner cupboard, nice to find in Cherry. Thats a very nice Shaker handled "basket". Guess this is off topic. :D

Here's an idea for you to help keep the display antique looking. Have someone duplicate the original background (like the background in my case). I'm pretty sure someone could use a photo and resize it or something like that. Then apply that to the metal sheet. The top panel comes off of the case really easily, there are two screws on each side, then the display panel slides right out. Then you can use the magnets to hold the knives in place, and they'll be easy to remove for use.
I agree with Jone, don't damage the case!

Are you getting idea overload yet? Sorry!

Not off topic - side topic! :D That Shaker slate blue wooden basket came from Pleasant Hill Shaker Village - my son bought it for me as a Christmas gift. I see that we have similar taste in other things besides Charlows and Cat knives.;):D

Mark,

That is a idea that had already occurred to me and I like it a lot. I thought the Fine Cutlery and shields in the middle of the display was on the glass - but - since I have looked at yours very carefully - it appears to be on the mounting board. Is that correct ? My printer will print on 19"x13" matte paper, which is big enough for the display board. If you ever have the glass out of yours, PLEASE snap me a dead on picture of the center of the display board and you could email it to me. I could duplicate the color of your mint condition display board by using the color dropper, but, I would need a high resolution picture, taken dead straight on of the type face and shields, where they would not appear slanted. I could work on it in Photoshop, print it out, seal it, and glue the heavy paper print to the metal. Only when and if you ever get time and I would be in your debt.

I agree with you and Jennifer - every time I think about using a saw around that case, I get to feeling poorly.

I don't mind the idea over load - I think everyone's help is helping me decide.:)

I suppose I should have taken out the knives before the cell phone pics and it would have looked better.

I like the looks of this set-up a lot. My vote would be to make the divider/ insert look as similar as possible to the original wood case which would probably require a bit of distressing. More than anything, I like the fact that you'd need 30 knives to fill it up in that configuration. That should keep you busy for a couple weeks. ;)

No problem, I'll PM you with some details and questions later today.

I appreciate you - my friend !! 👍:D:D

Thank you Mark and Charlie's covered metal, combined with your idea, and a little my idea seems to be the leading option right now!
👍:) - looking forward to the PM.
