Old knives on sale at flea markets

I picked up a very rare boy scout knife from a roadside garage sale and made enough money on it to buy gas to get home from my first knife show. I did not know it was worth that much when I bought it, just bought it because I liked it.

No kiddin'?? I may have to suggest he let me show it around a little more and see what I can learn. The knife is in VERY good condition, with original sheath and all, the one quirky thing I know about it is that the knife is unmarked. It's been shown to several VERY knowledgeable people who swear it is undoubtedly a Ruana, but they think it might be one of His earlier ones. May have to skip over to Mr. Levine's forum and see what I can learn. Thank you very much for mentioning that.

Flea markets are just one of the places I like to hunt for old advertising knives to add to my collection. Most can be bought for fair prices and are in great condition.

Runs With Scissors,

You might want to check out www.ruanaknives.com , and see if a model matches it. The line line has changed just slightly over the years. Also, I agree that it could be an unmarked knife, some of the early one's were'nt.

As for flea markets, most of my kitchen knives come from them. It gives you a good chance to check out quite a few different brands. I've picked up ton's of SAK's in the $5 range also at them.

There is a antique swap meet held the first sunday of the month on the old navy base where I live. Well I went this month and I got some good buys, I think so anyway. I got an ulster BSA knife for 3.00, a little rust but very good conition otherwise. camco lone ranger bullet for 4.00 two remingtons RH70 for 2.00 and RH36 or 38 (have to clean it) for 4.00 paul henckels 3 blade gold scroll handle lobster knife still in original case and looks like its never been sharpened for 6.00 I don't know what it worth but hey what the heck. western boulder co. 3 blade nodel 445 and j. primble belknap 3 blade model 926 both for 5.00 and stiletto knife co single blade model 1100.

BUt these aren't the reason for tears, I found a first model Ruana for 375.00, almost in tears cause I didn't have the $$$$ (I was injuried at work apr.2001 been total disabled since) and because it hadn't been cared for like a knife should. rusted in places and light pitting starting what a shame. So I walk up to this guys booth right, he has a display case full of knives and I immidiately spot the Ruana and asked to see it. He hands it to me, says I want 375.00 and proceeds to tell me who Ruana is, I said yeah I know who he is. and he continues on f*cking up the history trying to show how smart he is. I said yeah I am familiar with Rudy Ruana and his knives. he shut up briefly. I admired it for a few (first one I've held as well as seen in person) Shook my a head and gave it back, he gets uptight well you know this is a custom and is very old I'm not asking to much. Knowing exactly what he's thinking, I said Hey I wasn't shaking my head because of the price, but because its a shame it wasn't cared for better. He runs his mouth off again "well you know down in Montana they actually use their knives, not like you Californians who keep it in the box to look at it. (wrong thing to say to me) I said,
"I use my boxed up knives, but I also take care of them properly. then he says " People from montana use their for everyday life their outdoors people not like here." I am a little ticked now, and say, " You know what this knife wasn't owned by a person who works or uses it outdoors because we know how to care for a knife and do, and sir by the way I hunt and have killed deer, elk, and bear how bout you?" and I walked away. This guy was an a**, he doesn't think a woman knows about this kind of thing and has to try and degrad and talk down to me. Its not like I was in a little dress, high heels, and makeup plastered on my face, I was wearing levi's work boots t-shirt and my leatherman on my side plus I walk up and immidiately ask for the only knife he got that's worth anything. DUH what would this tell you!, yeah this person doesn't know anything about knives, I'll have inform her and I'll show off so everyone sees how smart I am (more like how dumb). this is not the impression anyone else would have gotten. Sorry I just hate it when "mostly" guys do that to me, its very irritating.

Sorry to hear about your experience Lady Colt. It shouldn't have mattered if you were wearing an evening dress and pumps. The second you said you knew who Ruana was, he should have shut up. Only a knife enthusiast would know that. As for the "Some people use their knives" crap, I think you pegged it. Those who know how to use also know how to care for. Stick to your guns and make those bozos eat their words. Good on ya.

I'm finding the good collectable stuff harder to find simply because people are more inclined to research their old stuff on the Internet now.

Thanks, I think what pissed me off the most was: he ruined what otherwise would have been a wonderful experience handling a ruana for the first time. I know i'll be kicking myself in the a** for along(the rest of my life!!!!) for not be able to buy it, but that's how it goes
