I have one of these small slippies. My question is, since there is no spring will the blade eventually get so loose that it hangs limp like a wet noodle?

Probably. The #5 has no locking mechanism, just a friction fit, so yeah it will get sloppy...just like an old fashioned penny knife. You're not out a lot of money....just get one larger that has the locking ring

If it does, a light peening with a hammer will snug it right back up.

Not to belabor the point, but I have a #7 with locking ring, and it locks up just as tight as a fixed blade

The number 6 Opinel is the smallest Opinel with a lock.
