Orange knife handles, more "acceptable"?

I didn't like them at first, but they grew on me. It's anti-tacticool if there is such a word :)

When you drop an orange knife in the woods, it is hard to miss. If it is all black on the other hand ...

That is why most of my knives are brightly colored.

I saw somewhere (I think it was here) where someone had GID sandwiched in their scales, I thought that was a great idea.

I have a tan Izula...i think it gets less attention than any knife I own.
Even a SAK is likely to generate a comment, even though it's probably one of aproval, but the light colored Izula...nothing.
I don't even think most people consciously see it when I use it, it's weird.

I had the exact same experience. When I carry my tan Izula I get far less questions and looks than when I take out and use the black Izula. This is in front of close friends or family that know what I do and what I have. It's odd no doubt.

And just the opposite happens with my EDC back pack. When I have the black Maxpedition Sitka I don't recall anyone asking or commenting. But when I have the same backpack but in Khaki with me someone always seems to ask "are you going to war" or "what are you planning on doing with that". The exact same bag but just 2 different colors.

I hear tell that some people are so crazy and impractical as to love orange scales on their knives for no other reason than their favorite football team wears orange. :D

Blue. Second place tie for green and tan. These are "friendly" colors for most folks...

Bingo. And ironically blue tends to be more visible if you drop it outdoors--there's virtually nothing in nature that is actually blue. Even blueberries are actually purple. :p

The same logic applies to camo too: if people see you in the woods in Realtree camo or better yet blaze orange appearal and they think "hunter" or "sportsman" even if you are carrying a gun!

OTOH - if you are hiking public trails all decked out in woodland camo or ACUs with a boonie cover and covered in web-tactical gear they think "creepy militia guy" (I think: "mall ninja"), even if you aren't armed!

-perception is reality-

+1
Orange is common on rescue and emergency stuff.
It's a happy color.
Darker and camo stuff seems more predatory to some.

I pulled out my Spyderco Delica 4 at work today for cutting up boxes. Mine is the normal production run with the hallow ground and the black frn handles. My boss told me I couldn't use it. So he hands me a cheap 1$ orange box cutter, and said that I can use...and it broke a few minutes later. Now Im starting to look for some colored or non-agressive looking knives to bring to work lol.

Get a pink delica! ;)

Then there's the orange blades:

Totally agree to this. I got a blue mini-grip and a pink Izula just because I recognize the mental mindset of America. The pink Izula looks far less menacing that my Spyderco Native or waved Delica. I am quickly becoming a fan of bright colors.

Absolutely. Blue beats orange by a big margin, at least here, and beats yellow and pink as well. Those colors are too close to colors that nature produces during one portion or another of the year. Blue, however, just plain doesn't exist in nature here (maybe if I lived on an island in the tropics??? ;) ).

Blue FFG Delica is great... and nearly out of stock everywhere. I love Oranges too. I should try the Spong Bob stickers on my BM 558... perhaps I can find Mickey Mouse or Garfield ones as I like 'em better...

I think is quite normal, I mean, for many reasons:

- First: orange is a brigth color, its easy to see, it takes your atention, so you tend to think about it as non-theatening, its like “Dont worry, if I pull out this knife your gonna notice it clearly“ that give the people a (false) sense of security, if someone its gonna atack you with a knife or something then he will try to keep the weapon the more outnoticed posible, for example black handle and black blade.

- Second: Orange is the color of many rescue tools, specially in the sea.

- Third: Probably people with bad intentions are not gonna like a orange handle, it migth sound stupid but its an instictive reaction, you dont imagine a ganster of a mafia member carrying a orange, yelow or pink knife, you asociate black or maybe camo.

- Forth: Its look less intimidating, I mean the tool it self, it gives it a “happy“, even cheap, looking, far better than a serious, best techological polymer handle military knife, a orange handle knife is the kind of knife you dont asociate with a tougth, serious and more dangerous tool (or weapon). Also helps to draw atention for the more threatening silver color of the steel.

And even more, the training replicas of the knifes or fireweapons are usually brigth colors, like orange, yelow or red.

Its awesome the amount of info we actually process in just a moment to calculate the threating level of something, I guess we keep that from our more “animal“ part.

Thats my humble opinion.

I slapped an orange scale on my XM-18 and asked my wife what she thought of it. The first thing she said was that now it looked like a utility knife. I don't mind that one bit.

I've been on an orange handle kick because I use my knives while hunting and camping a lot and have a tendency to put them down on the ground, especially when cleaning game. Then I freak out because I can't find it, especially if it's something like green or tan micarta with a black blade. The orange really helps my eyes lock in on the knife. As for what people think, they can kiss my you know what. I understand the psychology of the colored handle though.

Im pretty much on the same page, I dont care what it looks like to others. I do have a soft spot for all knives, I like daggers and swords, and big thick rambo knives, they just dont suit my use. A nice bushcraft sort of knife with a bright dont loose me handle seems to suit my needs pretty well. Even my Axe gets a coat of orange spray paint from time to time, if I was more cautious it would not be needed but it has saved my but before.

Under a blue Photon micro light the orange glows like a light stick, that has saved my but a few times as well.

I must say that I am really liking the orange handles. I have some xm's with orange handles and really love them. You would not believe how much more tacitcal an xm-18 looks with a blasted/black scale vs. a orange or yellow stonewashed scale !!! I think many perceive black as Tactical or Stealthy. I dont really know too many people who actually carry knives to be honest. My wife actually doesnt understand my fascination with them or why I carry one in the first place. I will save my breath for hot soup on that one....lol. I am a hunter also, so the orange handles apeal to me for that reason. Two years ago, I shot a doe close to 5pm. By the time I field dressed her, it was getting pretty dark. I layed down my CRK One Piece Sable IV that I was using to do something else for a moment, cant remember what exactly. When it came time to get my knife, I could not find it. After looking for about 10 minutes, I found it. Dark grey knife on ground at dusk is not good. For this reason, my dad asked for an orange handle knife for xmas. I ended up getting him a fixed blade buck omni I think its called.
So, even though I really like black scales and blasted titanium on my knives, the orange scales are really growing on me for the many reasons posted in this thread.

Great Thread By The Way !!!
