Our troops ARE carrying big knives

Well that depends what service you are in, unit, squadron, etc.

I was active duty AF for 8 years and we were never allowed to carry any blade over three inches. However when you are issued a F/U, or M7 bayonet that is different story. It also depends on the time. When I was sent to Desert Shiled/Storm most of the rules went out the window. Just like "saluting" (much of the reason for this was not to make an officer a target by bringing his rank to attention). It also depends on your commander as many will vary on what they will allow. Often times much of this is left up to their descretion.
