Just want to know how PM2 compression lockup % varies, please post pics of your PM2's locking % and include how old your unit is. Thanks.

Also, what's the Ideal lockup percentage specially when New in Box.
What's the Implication or effect of an early lockup or late lockup?

Here's my PM2, Brand New out of the box, it's almost 50% lockup position, Please correct me if I'm wrong, I think it should be around 10-20% only lockup position when Brandnew. What bothers me is at this late lockup for a New PM2 I find it a little hard to disengage the lock rather than having around 10-20% lockup, and it sticks a bit.

Blade centering is perfect though.

Mine is perfect. Lockbar is just on the blade...none hanging off early, or towards the center.

It's fine, it's normal, if anything I like my lock up pass 50% so I know it isn't going anywhere. Out of box they do very a bit but most of my PM2s (13) all are at least 40%. It's not a part that will wear in a few hundred flicks, more like years. Of daily 300 flicks.
The stickiness should go away after a couple hundred flicks ;)

Just checked all 5 of mine and each one is just about at 40%. They came that way and haven't budged after a gazillion flicks.
The stick will go away after you play with it for a while.
Don't sweat it and go cut stuff! It's fine.

What Joe said. I just checked both of mine and they're at about 30%. I think this whole deal about wanting early lock-up in anticipation of eventual wear is an internet-fueled popular misconception. A well-built and well-engineered knife will show little or no wear or movement at the lock-bar/tang interface after initial break-in, even after thousands of opening/closing cycles. If anything, extremely early lock-up is a dangerous trend.

As to the lock-stick thing, my Black G10, satin-bladed PM2 was a little sticky when new, but has broken in very nicely with the use it's had. My digi-camo, black-bladed knife was bought used on the Exchange and has not seen much handling. It makes an audible click when releasing the lock and takes slightly more index finger pressure to release than it's brother. It's no big deal to me and I'm sure it would break in nicely if I played with it or used and carried it more.

Yup--just go cut some stuff, dude.

I think the early lock up craze is in regards to Ti frame locks and the YT know it alls stating unless your lock is at ~ 5% your lockbar will be on the scale side in a week. Come on!!
All steel surfaces on the compression lock and I think we needn't worry about wear for the foreseeable future.
Stop putting knives under a microscope and use them!

And op I'd be more worry about the edge grind and keeping it sharp more than any other aspect of the knife, otherwise you just bought yourself a flicking toy instead of a cutting tool.

Thanks for all the replies! 👍
What bothers me is, an earlier lockup would be much easier/lighter to pinch when disengaging. Having a late lockup for a Brandnew unit takes way more pinch force to disengage, adding to the stiffness of the lockbar when New.

I actually have a Blister already on my index finger!

And at the price range of the PM2, Im one of those not so well off who considers this an expensive piece already, and would expect more if not the best unit.

From another thread.
Would prefer to get the one on the left most for a Brand New unit. But instead I got the one in the middle...

My most used PM2, and very first Spyderco bought 5.5 years ago:

Maybe it's just the lighting, focus, and angle, but is that thing real? Blade jimping is not square, liner jimping has gaps, G10 is bit rounded. I don't know...

Like everybody else here has said... your lockup is fine. Really... there's just no issue I can see with the lockup specs on your P2 in the original pix. That lock may not ever move from where it is now.

I've been carrying the same digi-cam P2 five days a week for several years now and my lockup hasn't moved from where it started on day one right outta the box. My other 2 current Paras are less used but they still have the same lockup they had when I first got them. Some of the dozen or so Paras and Para 2s that I've had and sold or traded in the past locked up where yours does now. But I had not one lock movement problem among the lot of them. I will say here that I don't flick my knives open and I don't play with them constantly. I open them to cut things and then I close them until the next time I need to cut something.

If you're having a problem operating the compression lock, it may just be that you need a couple of different techniques for unlocking the blade until everything breaks in and gets a bit easier. Using an index finger pinch is one popular technique, but you can also use the side of your thumb to unlock the blade and then use your index finger to start folding the blade.

The compression lock is steel on steel. I DO flick and play with my knives a lot, mostly my compression locks because they are fun. I also use them. I have some I have had for years, with no movement in the lock. Some of mine have been around 50% which has not proven to be a problem in any way.
