Who would have thought this stuff would be hard to track down. I've checked local grocery stores (Shaws). Tractor Supply, Lowes and Home Depot. They either used to carry it, or have some sort of blend with soy, rape, canola and/or corn oil. If I'm going to use this stuff I want it straight, not some blend that will be hard to relocate.

Anyone know where I can get some???

Sam's usually has it
I just noticed you are in Hawaii.
That may change the availability for you Sorry

Phil - I think the trouble you have is region. We're all in the south (the folks in this thread I mean) and we can buy it at the grocery store. You might check with bulk food stores in your area and see about ordering it.

I'd never heard of a turkey fry before I moved to NC... out west we cooked things a little differently than down here.

Perhaps retailers are reluctant to carry peanut oil because of the
number of people with peanut allergys...?

Anyhow, I used to use that oil, and if I were going to use a vegetable type oil again,
I'd check into Canola before deciding on which one.

If I was out in Hawaii like you,... I'd try to get some "macadamia nut" oil, and give it a try... Might be cool PR too.

I've heard the macadamia nut shells are good fuel for forging.

I live in Hong Kong and there's tons of it at the supermarket, but I tend to stick to canola ;)

I buy mine from Kihei Safeway and Kahului Foodland, I'm pretty sure if they sell it on Maui they have some on Oahu.

I bet you'd get a better deal on coconut oil. Tai has always had expensive taste. :D

Phyl I would be more than happy to send you some. I have 5 gallons sitting here that has not been opened yet. But I would be scarred to death to see how much it would cost to ship it to you. :)

Hi Guys,

I'm actually in NH right now and trying to get a couple a knives done for my Dad. Just bought 2 quarts at a local health food store. (Walmart was a bust.)

Thanks for all the tips. I'll see what I can do on Oahu when I get back.

Takao, what you doing on Maui?

Aloha, Phil

Just out of curiosity, what do you need it for? If it's blade related, I feel like a n00b.

I'm going to try it for a quenching medium for heat treating some of my blades and tools (for some of my steals). Some of the commercial quench oils are either expensive and/or difficult to find. I am attracted to trying peanut oil as it's reported to have a high flash point, thus reduced toxic fumes.

It, presumably, is also easier on our environment than the petroleum based stuff. I am also disinterested in some of the other vegetable based oils (such as soy, corn, canola/rape) as they are increasingly extracted from genetically engineered crops, which is a practice I chose not to support.

Smart and Final if you have them in your area. That is where I get mine.
