Plain Edge Or Serrated!?

Lets see...

current carry(on me for EDC daily):
PE Nav-'Kat
PE SS Fly
PE SpyderCard
CE S60V Millie(2.5 PE/1.5 SE)
CE Alum Salsa(50/50)
SE FRN/ATS-55 Endura

I use my Endura daily, from breakfast peeling an orange, to breaking down boxes that are double or triple wall at work...

my millie sees the most use of my SE options, just works well. Sandwich maker, box killer, packing strap chopper...

The knife that gets the most use in my EDC-pile is my 'fly. I just got a neck rig for it, making it more convenient, but I used to carry IWB for the last year. The 2.25" blade, SS handles, just doesn't get the reactions my Millie does. Have a convex edge on it, and with a 600grit sandpaper edge, it slices pretty d&#97mn well.

part plain - part serration, can look "cool"

but in the end I much prefer a plain edge -
as the serrations feel crude in cutting -
too much like a saw -
and not too much like a knife.

Guess it depends on what you intend to use the knife for. I usually prefer a plain edge but love the combo edge in a bird knife. Use serrated part to sever wings and legs then the plain edge to finish meat parts. Serrated or combo edge is almost useless for field dressing big game. Hardly ever carry a knife on a day to day basis, no need.

I very much prefer a plain edge. I often cut cord usually 1/4" or less in diameter and I want precise cutting (for decorative knots) but even when I cut rope I don´t like serrations.

I think serrations are good for particular uses that I don´t have.

Once I decided to try out serrations for daily use and carryied a fully serrated Delica for a while, but felt so uncomfortable with it that I took it to my Norton stone and changed it to a plain edge, then I thought it was a fantastic knife.

Carry a knife when you think you have no need, what if you need to open something when your out (like a food package or cut a seat belt in an emergency?!)

generally, i'd say plain edge too, combo only if it's an all around knife. might be good for survival situations, but else it's mostly for the looks i guess. but i have to say, i love my serrated endura. it's just aus-6, but due to that it's soooo easy to sharpen...great knife. and you can do controlled cuts with a serrated edge, like cutting paper is very easy, since the serrations prevent it from slipping of the blade. i wouldn't recommend it for cutting small ropes, but for thicker ones, it's great as well. precise rope cuts only work when you lay the rope on something straight and tough (like a table).

cheez

I like the plain-edge...and the serrated edge...and the combo edge.

I think it really depends on the knife and what you're cutting.

My combo-edged Endura works very well and I have never had problems cutting various material.
But the same is true with my plain-edged G-10 Police...

I guess you just have to see what works for yourself.

Good luck,
Allen.
