Portable Bandsaw Mounting Pictures Needed

It is on their front page: "UPS GROUND ORDERS OVER $149.00 USE PROMOTION CODE SUMMER"

Сan anyone suggest something about the blades? Maybe some FAQ about band saws and their blades...

There are a lot of great setup ideas in this thread, USP should deliver me the saw on Thursday, so I will try to build something on weekends. Profiling the blade with hand tools and 1x30" grinder takes a lot of time for me now, hope that band saw will speed up this process.

Starret and Morse bi-metal blades do well in my HF portaband. I occasionally have some trouble with the blades jumping off the guide bearings, but that is likely due to the cheap construction of the saw rather than the blades.

For Blades: http://www.portabandstore.com If you bookmark/favorites this link it will fail on use... have to get all the extra stuff after ".com" out and it works. The blades for sale are Starrett Univerz (med. duty, gen purpose bi-metal)... http://www.starrett.com/pages/1499_band_saw_blades.cfm Starrett has better blades but these are really good for their price.

Lenox http://www.bandsawbladesdirect.com/shop_porta.cfm has excellant porta band blades (mayb have to space your guide wheels a little larger, but maybe not) for quite a bit more money. I've not found a place to get Lenox blades for a great price. The Tech. Docs. at left on this page have a lot of info.

Thank you. I will give a try to those stores. So far I have already ordered DeWalt blades from Amazon. They should arrive next week. My band saw is already here, I will be building the stand for it tomorrow. I have one more question about blades. The manual requires the blades to be .020" thick only and says to contact the service center to use .025" blades. One of the blades I have ordered from Amazon is .025. Will I be able to use it or will I need to adjust something to do so? Mike, the bandsawdirect store that you recommended sells .023" thick blades. Did you have any problems with those extra .003"?

I'd really like to hear what DeWalt had to say about using thicker blades.

I adjusted the guides on my DeWalt because I thought they were off center by just a bit. I tried to make it feel and look the same. Whether I adjusted to the factory spec. for it, or not, I don't know.

Did I get you an answer?

Mike

Thank you Mike. I will give their service center a call to see what they say. If guides have to be adjusted every time I switch between 0.020" and 0.025" then I will use one size only.

Sergiy,

Maybe you are going to use your saw differently than I do, but my experience is I don't change blades much and it's not difficult or time consuming to set the roller guides.

Mike, I have almost no experience with band saws - I just received one and made a stand for it over weekend. I have used it a few times to cut the metal when I was building the stand, but that was it. So I have no idea how often will I need to change the blades and how difficult it is to adjust the guides. I have ordered the blades in 24, 18 and 10 tpm and was planning to use 24 tpm blade for 1095 steel, 10 tpm for wood/micarta/G10 and 18 for 1/4" 416 steel. The 18 tmp blades I ordered are 0.025", so now I am trying to figure out will I be able to use them without too much trouble or should I just return them and get the blades in 0.020" instead.

Can any of you show how the table was mounted to the saw?

This looks like the best alterantive for me.

Many thanks for posting your pics.

Sergiy,

If I understand, all blades being 0.025" and finding out from DeWalt what the setting process/clearance is should be a one time deal.

Hey guys, does the 6 amp band saw have the "beans" to handle the work we do? There is a serious cost differential when comparing the 6 amp vs. the 10 amp saw---roughly 200 to 250 dffference thanks cooter

Cooter,

You should be able to get the bigger DeWalt delivered for $200, +/- a little. Does the smaller 6 amp machine have variable speed and a table light?

The 6-amp saw is has more than enough "beans" to do what I need it to do. It has never even come close to bogging down. I use it mainly for cutting bar-stock and rough profiling blade blanks. It also cuts my guard/bolster stock, my pin stock, profiles my handle material and weeds my garden. Besides, Toolking.com is selling the 6-amp model (D28770K) for $179.88... which is a great deal IMHO.

Thanks Erin. I ordered one yesterday and had it shipped to a friend in Mass.
It will cost me 205$ Canadian (with the free shipping offer).
Buying one from the local Home Depot would have cost me 460$.
Warranty will be void when I take it back to Canada but at that price it's worth the risk.

Once you've had some time to work with it, let is know what you think. It's always fun to hear the testimonials of another convert. :D. Maybe even post some photos of your mounting and table setup.

Patrice,

Could bring or mail it to the U.S. to send for warrenty... shouldn't end up needing to do that... it's a professional level tool.
