Pronunciation of Knife Jargon

1. I say SOG, like Dog- I don't see it written as S.O.G. in their logo.
2. Detent is dee tent (now that I know I was mistaken, haha)
3. I would say it "Val lot ton"
4. I would say it "Em Custah" (custa like in custard)
5. I say it as "Tan-Toe"
6. "Zick-are" (never really have said this one out loud, but that is how I read it.)

My hardest is always with Japanese words. On the sword forums I had a hard time relaying all the parts of the blade and the handle, etc. I can't remember a word if I can't pronounce it.

It is DEE-tent. Look it up in the dictionary.

Click the little red speaker icon next to the main entry and nice lady will even pronounce it for you. Even better here is the wav file.

Detente [pronounced day-TONT] is some thing completly different then a detent. ;)

I remember when they first started this. I got weeks of decidedly juvenile giggles out of making them pronounce anything remotely interpretable as filthy -- although my favorite is still the completely clean "dork." Try it. See if you don't agree.

i just checked their site, SOG stands for 'studies and observation group'. apparantly a reference to a vietnam era government operation.

I have some trouble following the knife jargon myself so I have a question that kinda fits here.

Being fairly new here I read a lot about EDC, I pretty much understand that it's a folder. From what I read Kershaw Leek is an EDC. But what does it stand for? What is the primary attributes of an EDC?

Stands for Every-Day Carry. Doesn't have to be a folder, although I think you'll find much more folders than fixed blades being used for EDC. As for what you use for you EDC, it usually depends on your environment, if you work in the city, for instance, you won't be carrying around a 10 inch Bowie or something.

I've always assumed "EDC" is just forum short-hand for "every day carry," as in someone's personal choice. Sellers, I think, picked up the abbreviation as a guideline for prospective buyers: "good for EDC;" "good for camping;" "good for special forces wannabes."

Dork is not totally clean, it is vulgar slang as well.

Right you are. Forgot about that usage, but we didn't know that in jr. high/high school.

3. I would say it "Val lot ton"

Stress on the 1st syllable or 2nd? My first assumption was the 2nd, but I think it was Josh on videoknife that I heard say VAL-lot-ton. And I figured he'd know better than I.

1. s.o.g. as in special operations group, correct?
2. i believe either is correct
3. proper noun, not sure
4. just as confused as you are
5. either is correct
6. zie-car would be my guess.

I recently heard someone pronounce bali as "ba-lee" with a short "a". Being Filipino, I've never heard any other Filipino use the short "a" sound in any word thus far. I can't speak tagalog (pronounced "toe-gaw-log", kinda- it's the best I could come up with on how to say it. It's the primary dialect in Filipino), but I asked my girlfriend who can speak several dialects of Filipino and she agreed. It would make sense to me that the proper way to pronounce it is with a short "o" sound, as in "baw-lee".

That brings me to "tanto". Keeping in mind that I don't know s--t about the Japanese language, I've yet to hear the short "a" sound in any of their words either. I've always thought it was pronounced "tawn-toe". anyone have any insight on this?

It counts as anything one carries on himself on a daily basis. This includes cell phones, flashlights, personal accessories, etc. Just go to EDC Forums and they'll tell you. They have a section for pretty much anything you can keep on you, from guns to electronics.

FYI -- I had the rather cool, and accidental, opportunity to speak with Bob Terzuola today, and he confirmed another pronunciation that's eluded me:

It's ter-ZWOH-la

Long "o" if my shorthand isn't clear. He's a class act, btw, just like his knives.
